While I'm documenting the process, I decided to look at some numbers. The following is a breakdown of how many slabs were cracked (as you can see the majority of coins were not cracked but acquired raw): Raw 39 PCGS 7 NGC 6 Anacs 7 ICG 2 PCI 2
Of the 24 total slabs cracked, only 5 were straight graded: PCGS 1 NGC 0 Anacs 2 ICG 1 PCI 1 The most expensive of those was the ICG at a cost of $41.09 (and was bought using ebay bucks). So nothing too expensive in terms of straight graded coins has been cracked.
In terms of straight graded coins, yes! Now if we include details slabs, then there are higher amounts paid. If anyone wants to guess what that coin was, feel free to do so (hint: it’s likely the one you think it would be).
It is there, but it is certainly not obvious. I have also noticed that details grading is very inconsistent. I have seen some XF details coins that look AU while some AU details coins look XF. There are plenty of nice coins in details holders and this is part of the reason why I like to seek them out for this set (plus they can go cheaper, which is always nice).
I guess I’ll reveal the “obvious” as the most I have spent was on the Seated Dollar (and it’s not even close as the 2nd most expensive, the Trade Dollar, was over $100 less).
Newest addition....this flying eagle took some time to find the right example. What do you all think it says? "Dean", 'Dec _ _" , "Deun" , "Decin" @lordmarcovan or anyone else... Whatever it says, I thought this was a cool fit for my set.
Looks like "Dean" to me, which makes this one a love token (even if it was created by Dean out of love for himself). Fun graffiti coin (and yes, some good graffiti is always better than plain old scratches!) Dunno why anyone in their right mind would submit that to PCGS, though.
BTW, I just had a spin back through this thread and enjoyed revisiting your progress. I like the way you're taking these "problem" coins out of their "shameful slab" context and putting them back into a context where they can be appreciated for their better traits without focusing too much on their less appealing attributes. As I learned well in my "holey coin" collecting phase, there are a number of "problem" coins out there which still can be appealing. And their availability at much lower prices can offer some bargains. "Eye appeal on the cheap", if you will. If you felt like it, you could even create a CollectiveCoin album for these, as I did for my Dansco 7172. That's a way to show not only your page progress, but the individual coin pix as well.
New here to the forum. I really enjoy reading other's experiences with this type set. I've stalked this forum for a while before joining, and the information I've gleaned has been very helpful and probably saved me a lot of money too! This forum started me on the 7070 album. I started off trying to fill holes on a budget of $50/coin. Still my goal, but I began by simply trying to fill all the holes with any grade. I started getting some grade discrepancies, so now I've settled on grades in the 20 to 45 range for the older coins, with AG grades sufficing for the moment on the old copper coins. I'm complete through the half dimes, with some other holes further on permanently filled with coins I already had on hand, and some other holes filled in with temps until I get there and insert better grades. Of course I use higher grades for the more modern coins when available. I've been collecting for many years, but I don't think I've ever had as much fun as trying to fill this set! Good luck with yours and keep posting pictures please! I'll try to include some pictures somewhere of my set. That capped bust half of yours is a beauty!
@Murphy45p best of luck on your set and I'd definitely be interested in seeing your progress! @lordmarcovan thanks for taking a look! I really don't know why someone sent the Flying Eagle in for grading. I know some people send coins as mementos or because they have some special meaning to them, but I doubt that is the case here since it's in the newest generation holder (which has been around for only about three years) and was already sold. Maybe someone just sent a whole collection in to be certified before selling? Either way, I'm glad it showed up on ebay and I was able to win it for my set.
It does look nice for a details coin (which is my goal for this set). I would say it's not a VF, but could be F15 Details. I've looked through a ton of listings between AG and VF and this was up there with the best that I saw (at least in my targeted price range of under $70).
And a new addition...this Arkansas is cleaned, but it's not too harsh (fits well into my theme of problem coins with plenty of detail). It's an upgrade over a circulated Monroe for the Commem spot.
Last week was eventful for the type set as I added 4 pieces! First the raw coins.... ~An 1859 Indian Head Cent (VF details - grainy surfaces): ~1834 Capped Bust Dime (VF details - damage):
And then the (formerly) slabbed ones... ~1942 Walking Liberty (Anacs MS 61): ~And last but not least, an 1842 Seated Dollar (PCGS VF Details - Cleaned):
