How big can a perentage be, its always less than 100 percent, nuh? What are you saying in this message? Ruben

As a platinum collector I want to thank all the nay-sayers as it you who will hopefully give me a running shot at buying the Platinum Anniversary Set the morning they go on sale. Amazingly, I read opinions that the 2006 ASE reverse set wouldn't appreciate much because it was taking so long for 250,000 sets to sell. I even remember people saying the 2006 W Platinum eagles wouldn't be worth much more than spot. Read the archives. Like it or not Platinum Eagles are a series and there are collectors who will buy them each year just as people buy gold and silver. Platinum Eagles are just as much of a "coin" as gold and silver eagles. The demand is fractional, but it is there. If you dont want to buy Platinum then dont.....at least initially.
Well, its more likely that the expensive costs of Platinum bullion which will allow you to get a shot at buying them, assuming you have the money. Good Luck to You! Ruben
I agree with you, Aberlight. In fact, I hope that platinum prices will continue to climb so that the APE set will be bought primarily by platinum collectors and not by speculators or gold/silver collectors who are interested mainly in speculating on the APE. Hopefully, at the end of the offering period, the mint will melt the sets that are not sold.
platinum anniversary i think the 10th anniversary platinum set will sell out. but not fast enough. and at the end. it will be traded a very little above bullion value. 15,000 pc each for reverse proof and proof are considered too many. sample: 10,000 pc of reverse proof gold against hundreds of thousand sold before on its high mintage. while 15,000 pc of reverse platinum against 15,000 plus sold before. that's the highest mintage. no way jose, that these platinum series will shine in price.
I think this makes it seem very high mintage, I agree. But if we go by total proof mintage for all denomination then it seems less. 1997 - 86,700 1998 - 63,000 1999 - 55,800 2000 - 51,000 2001 - 37,900 2002 - 40,400 2003 - 31,800 2004 - 22,400 2005 - 26,700 2006 - 31,000 2007 - 15,000 (reverse proof} I think the actual demand will be somewhere between the two though and this coin will perhaps be worth $1400 to $1600 after the sell out. The regular proof it comes with in the set will only be worth bullion prices though. This is only my guess, as usual the coin market is as predictable as the weather.
The 15,000 limit on Platinum anniversary sets seems to be posted everywere. Is there a official number published or is this a rumor? One key item here that is being over looked is the spread premium over bullion melt. The 2006 W 1/4 trades for $1250.00 or so on Ebay and the metal value is $330.00 for a spread premium of $920.00. Since I paid $380.00 for the coin last fall the future premium can fluctate along with the price of platinum. In essence the value of metal can fall to $1 and as long as the demand is present to maintain a premium of $379.00 I wouldn't lose money if I sold. Granted the price of platinum wont fall this much, but as a collector I feel that the low production numbers will offset the price of platinum if and when it falls. This is the first year in 6 years there is surplus of platinum on the market. The question of maintining a premium price is key. In 1999 I bought 1920's MS 62 -63 st augustine $20 for $350 or a premium $90 over then gold prices. The price of gold has gone up, but not the premium. If the Platinum Eagle set sells for $2500 and there are (3) 1/2 oz's of Platinum the premium is $500 over melt @ $2000.00. If the sets become worth $3500 than you a spread premium of $1500.00 that can offset any decline in Platinum Value. Granted the premiums can fluctate, but I would buy this before any Little Rock Commermative or Golden Dollars.
Platinum is expensive but if you are refering to the price of Platinum and Gold coins you need to remember that the price increase of lower minted coins is not always reflective of bullion prices....etc 1996 ASE. What does this sell for $50 or so for 1 oz silver.
