LordM Giveaway #90 (Mystery Box Pick #2)

    Contest status: CLOSED
    Winner (@Bradley Trotter)
    Shipped 10 April 2023
    Winner's notice of receipt

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The prize for this contest will be a mystery at first. I will pull one coin from one of my random boxes of unsorted World coins. So there's your first hint. It will be a non-US World coin. A pretty inexpensive coin, but it will be older, or interesting somehow, or silver (or maybe all three).

To enter: Be the first to guess the coin's identity (country, denomination, date), and it's yours- if you want it. I might drop some hints along the way if I feel they're necessary. We'll keep guessing until someone gets it right.

You may keep on guessing multiple times, but you must let at least two other people guess in between each of your guesses (in other words, you'll get a new guess every third post, if that makes sense). Since this will require feedback from me as the guessing progresses, please be patient with me when I'm not online. I'll try to keep the guesses moving in the right direction. If this new contest format works, there will likely be more like this (I have a lot of World coins in those boxes).

Totally free: the contest is free of charge, open to everyone, with free worldwide shipping. The only thing I ask is that you do please post to this thread later, when you have received the prize, so that we'll know you got it (that helps me keep track).

    Good luck!

    Numismatic regards,

    ~Robertson ("Rob") Shinnick ("LordM")

Starter hint: this coin is of a type that was heavily used in world commerce for a long time.

Good guess- and kind of close, in a way- but not correct.

You may guess again after two other folks have guessed.

Very good. It is indeed a Mexico 8-reales. But that's not the date (or necessarily the type).

You may guess again after two other people have had their guesses.

Edit/clarification: I'm assuming it is a Mexico City 8R. The mintmark is indistinct. The coin is dark and rough- and maybe even a contemporary counterfeit- but the date is clear.

Sal, though he posted the wrong denomination, and didn’t show the dated side of the coin, was a bit closer chronologically…

All right. We have identified it as a Mexican (probably) 8-reales piece. As far as I know, since the mintmark on the coin is not terribly visible in the photos I took, and I can't put the coin itself under a loupe since I've already sealed it up in an envelope to ship it to the eventual winner of the guessing game.

If it were a later Mexican coin, there would be no doubt it was Mexican, whether or not I could see the mintmark. So what does that suggest?

It suggests that Sal and Potty's colonial-era pieces, while not on target, are a little closer chronologically than some of the later guesses we've had.
