    So it’s a counterfeit, but maybe worth more as a contemporary counterfeit than a real one would be, strangely enough?

    You might be right. Sounds like these late-dated Charles IV counterfeit 8 reales were meant for circulation in China.

    Having a counterfeit 8 reale would be pretty neat,I'll have to keep my eye out for another.

    Update:

    The "coin" arrived in my mailbox a few hours ago. Based on the details that remain, this counterfeit is an imitation of an 8R from Mexico City. In addition, to the bungled portrait, it also bears the incorrect assayer initials for an example struck by the Casa de Moneda in 1817, as evidenced by the "H" above the leftmost pillar. The last official example struck bearing "H" in the assayer initials was struck in 1814.
