Next thing, see if you can get the Postal Inspectors involved. That's what they're there for. And NOBODY messes with the Feds. Tell him you want a full refund via USPS Postal Money Order in 3 days or you'll swear out a warrant. Then if he's ever stopped for a traffic violation in your state, he WILL be detained; if the Postal Inspectors are involved, he will be detained for a very inconvenient length of time. Go for it!

If this were an isolated case, I wouldn't say, start World War 3. But this has been going on, repeatedly, apparently.

Not sure why I'm asking, but. . . What did someone have to call to your attention?

Doug - - This is an excellent idea. I suspect, however, that none of this seller's coins/bullion went through the Postal Service (I don't think they exist in the first place).

Is it mail fraud to claim you mailed something?

Whatever you do and no matter what the seller says (as I've seen he posted in this thread speaking of resolution) do not under any circumstances close your Paypal case until you have your money back. If you close the case because of seller promises and giving someone the benefit of doubt in that they will do the right thing. If they don't you won't be able to open the case again once it's been closed and you will lose out on your money. Trust me I learned this lesson the hard way when I had an issue similar to this, although on another forum. I gave the seller in my case the benefit of doubt and mistakenly thought they would make things right. Instead as I would later find out it was all a ploy and con by the seller telling me whatever they had too just to get me to close the case against them; because they knew once I closed the case that was that and I would be SOL. Don't make the same mistake I did if possible.

"receipt with tracking information..." Sounds like it went through the mail. Supplying a non-existent tracking number "might" be a criminal act. You have nothing to lose by bringing in the Postal Inspectors.

There's another thing the OP can do, worst case. Put the seller's name, address, phone, and email into a formal request for completion of the transaction, here, in CT. Then if a prospective employer (or someone conducting a background check for a professional license, etc., etc.) ever Googles his name, etc., this incident may show up ===== no job. Big price to pay for a $500 scam.

StampBoards in Australia routinely does this with its few problem members.

I'd also check the CraigsList "collectibles" ads in the website nearest his home, looking for similar ads; here's Indiana's CraigsLists:
    bloomington
    evansville
    fort wayne
    indianapolis
    kokomo
    lafayette / west lafayette
    muncie / anderson
    richmond
    south bend / michiana
    terre haute

Do not do this! Releasing this information on a member will get it deleted, and the poster possibly banned as it was on purpose. Everyone is reacting as if they all know exactly what has happened. We have had things like this before and in some cases things did not work out, but in other cases , some had to eat crow, but it was in the internet forever.

Let the people involved work it out by PM as B/S/T are required to be done.

Yes, please. There can definitely be a lynchmob mentality at times, and sometimes an innocent member can be lynched. That is why we did away with them to begin with. Until someone is sure what has happened, I would say its best to PM the other person, or if you are really worried talk to the Mods. That is what they get paid the "big bucks" for. ;)

Well, if there's a mob consider me a member. I too may have been scammed. I'm giving him until the end of the year to resolve it and then I pursue other avenues for resolution.

Of course I am not saying to not pursue any remedies. If you knew me, you would know I would go absolutely postal if someone tried to rip me off. I would drive 5 states to show up on his doorstep if need be. I am simply saying that at times people jump into a situation maybe not knowing for sure all the facts, and until they are known its really not helping to publicly smear a person. Think about it, if I sold something and let's say maybe the postal service lost it, you coming onto the internet screaming I am a thief is not really going to encourage me to help sort the situation out, right? I will be pretty dang pissed at that point as well.

That's all. I simply say handling things privately, and possibly informing mods of what is going on, until you are sure what is happening is usually the best course IMHO. I have witnessed here on CT innocent members get pilloried for no good reason almost as often as hearing about ripoff artists.

That is within your rights, however do all further communication in private and by PM, no more on the forums.

No problem. I actually had informed Peter of my concerns last Saturday. I'll be more than willing to post back any positive news, should there be some :)

I agree that posting names and addresses crosses the line. I say this because a vendor in this forum basically extorted me when I was a newb by threatening to release my info if I did not stop criticizing a cleaned coin I received advertised as MS. He claimed he never sent me that coin. I had to suck it up and take the loss, but I am forever grateful that the mods prevented this smearing of my name. So this works in the favor of buyers, too.

Fixed your post for you. His last communication was on the 19th, but he had to come above water to try to keep the heat off him, but it was too late by then. He's nothing more than a scammer. His claim of a 'friend of his' needing help to sell certain expensive Morgans.....if you own an '89-CC in MS63 (which redllama claims he's trying to help him sell them.....but how many states will he try to sell these in before this story is obvious BS, though it is BS anyway), if you own an '89-CC in MS63, you KNOW what's going on, you don't need help from someone on a forum. You know how they should be sold, and that isn't by taking it cross country, from CA, where there's plenty of well established dealers, to PA. VPR, get that PP thing filed, get the CC involved, and get the feds involved, it IS a felony by ripping off someone with the mail in another state. redllama is in trouble, and doesn't even know the potential trouble he could face...he'd rather argue (but now, today, Dec 27th, he's being gracious? I say 'box of rocks' shows up to buy him more time, but he can't buy enough.

He tried the same on me, but when he said he would sell me eagles at spot via a paypal inv I knew he was full of crap. He even sent me a Thanksgiving greeting askin if my family had a good thanksgiving. I am so glad I didn't buy anything from him.
