I saw this listing today: https://www.ebay.com/itm/186939274556 The auction is listed in the Bullion category, but the listing states: "This is a Silver Commemorative ep round coin for display silver in color electronic plated". So it is electroplated and not a 1 ounce of .999 silver as it is listed on the coin. This is deceptive, and the seller has loads of negative feedback. I just wanted to be helpful to others who may not be aware of this issue with electroplated rounds
Listings like these take advantage of two things-- ignorance and greed. Ignorance in not reading and understanding the description and greed for thinking that you can get an ounce of silver for $19. Ebay has always been a caveat emptor marketplace.
I have gotten silver well below melt on eBay. It's very, very, very rare. Fake coins are very, very, very common on eBay, and apparently they'll stay that way.
That's why people are calling it things like "Fleabay" and stuff like that. You really have to know your, well, you know.
Contests, give aways or just being charitable are not the same as seller games or rubes believing they pulled off a bargain. Which is what the quote was about. It was mostly aimed at people buying over graded coins at a bargain price.
Glad to stay away from that seller, his feedback score would keep me away but I don't stack silver anyways. Yes, there are many rip offs on ebay and ebay don't care much, I mean they'll help you get your money back if you get ripped off but it's really on you. Biggest thing to remember is if it seems too good to be true it probably is!
Check this one out. Since eBay has a money back guarantee, I took a flyer at it. 1921D, NGC 66 Morgan dollar. The photo in the ad checked out and matched the one on NGC website. Starting bid was $50. This coin lists for about $1000 in that grade. It ran for 7 days and the day the auction ended it still had no bids. 5 minutes left on the clock and the high bid was 75 bucks or so. I sniped it with a max bid of $151 with 5 seconds left. I got out bid by $2, wasn't mad about it, maybe relieved because I'm sure it's either fraud with no coin being shipped and the seller leaving eBay holding the bag, or something along those lines, because it was not a rated seller. Two other items were ridiculous, clad quarter selling for 1000 bucks or something like that. I have one other theory........the ad was legit and the coin was stolen in a burglary. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335800579953 Check out this seller's other items. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?ite..._trksid=p4429486.m3561.l161211&_ssn=kestach43
Holy crap, it took not only 3 seconds for me to know that not only was that buffalo round fake, it was a terrible fake.
