I'm happy with what I already have. My average price is way down there and hate to mess that up. My average for gold is about $570. Not sure what my average on silver is.

Being at under melt can actually be a good thing, for now, anyways. Silver has been going down quite a bit, now falling to $29.25. I did pick up a gold 1945 dos pesos coin today, mainly because I got it for roughly spot when doing a partial trade. I'm one of us, though, that would love to see silver shoot up like crazy (LOL, don't forget the gold!).
With platinum, it sounds like you are quite experienced with it. What are your tips on buying it?
You described what I did today! LOL, who wouldn't sell at $28-32?

If only commemorative silver dollars went up that much. ;)

That's a great point, Jeff. If platinum and palladium could get to about $500 an ounce, I bet everyone would be buying it.

Also, it's quite weird that platinum, while rarer than gold, is cheaper. I have no idea, though, why (censored) is 3rd out of the 4 top metals. I guess people aren't going after it as much as in the past.

I've recently been buying some, but I really do wish I would've started at the $1,600 level. Back when I started collecting coins, I felt like it was outrageous for a 1 oz AGE to be $1,880, but now I'd skydive for that price. If it was $1,600, though, I would be the first person in history to land on Mars (not kidding.... well, not too much).

$13/oz? Whew, you must've been eyeballin' the market! For me, if silver goes back below $25/oz, the coin shops will have a money-makin' day for sure.

When you mean classic, are you referring to pre-33? I know that a lot of people call classic gold that, which is why I was asking.

If an XRF wasn't so expensive, you could see if those rocks had some gold in 'em! I doubt that a lot of them do, but you might could find a nice little bit in a geode.

I'd say that's what killed the Liberty dollar. I don't fully stand by it, but mainly it's an uneducated guess.

For silver, I personally would never buy at these prices unless it's junk silver for about $20 x face. I love junk silver, but for the people stacking the huge bars like 100 and 1000 oz...... I will never understand.

I hope you mean just silver. If you was waiting for gold to be $18, you'd be old! LOL, I'd go broke if gold was $18.

I wonder when you bought the gold. I was talking to a guy who works in one of my LCS's, and he said that back in 2002, he was buying 1/10 oz AGEs for $32.50.

Big forecast for GOLD by Major players
such as Bank of America plus other financial instatutions, have switched
from 1 1 ounce gold, eagles, and buffaloes to Pamp 1 ounce bars as premiums are much less.

I'm glad that collectors aren't buying, as I still need to reduce my cash inventory before more changes are made, and I like certified70 Gold Eagles, in the past finding daily Proof coins.

Yesterday my best find was (2) NGC 1916 1/10oz..
Dealers are still asking for elevated pricing of ~140%spot!

Well, I recently absconded with some ridiculously over priced silver eagles (burnished) from the US mint. Can't call it stacking, though. Pure collector dumbness........:)

I would love to buy a set of the gold eagles with the new reverse, but the high gold price scares me. I was reluctant when it was $1,800 an ounce. Now it’s over $2,300.

I have a few coins that I am buried in with respect to paying too much, which I enjoy. But those pieces are the exception. When you, sometimes in retrospect, have paid way too much, it takes the fun out of it for me.

I was buying gold coins in the 1960s when the official government price was $35 an ounce. Back then, only numismatic gold dated before 1933 was legal to own.

I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs over the last 60 years. This is obviously the highest price gold has ever been, and it’s scary. We know how the big banks can play with the gold price when they want to do it. Maybe the dollar has reached the point where they can’t or won’t do that any more, but it would be tough to take a $1,000 per ounce hit on a lot of gold.

I look at the price of a new gold eagle Proof set from the mint. It’s $1,600 over melt. If gold drops, that’s a big hole.

I still buy numismatic gold, but that’s all I’ve been buying.

I wish I had the money a few years ago,was planning on buying a nice escudo but they've gone up by at least $200+ within the year. Kind of feels like the $1,500-$1,800 days are over,i was still a little to young during that time.

I share your thoughts as always through my 70+ years of collecting, but my rewards have exceeded those realized by savings pieces of paper!
Here's my prime piece acquired yesterday that many collectors passed, but if you tried to locate, acquire that coin through normal processing, the odds are stacked against you, cost/time prohibitive, JMHO:

If anyone wants a nice chunk of vintage silver.
100oz Johnson Matthey JM Vintage Pressed Silver Bar With Original Numbers Matching Box...
    On Mineral Exchange.
Don't forget to figure in the 10% buyers fee.
I'd make a run at it but I have a new jeep to support and a gold puck I still have to pay for.

Had a seller offering a silver buffalo and an APMEX silver round for $28 each tonight at the coin club meeting auction.
I waited for someone else to bid but no one did.
I asked my Dad if he wanted them and he figured under spot...
    I picked up both for $28ea ($pot @ $29.68)
The seller has a few more at that price, he will put a couple more on next months sale.

If you can get circulated silver at 20x FV when melt is 22.3x FV, I'd say empty their shelves. And if you can get 1/10oz gold for $170 when spot is $236.38, well...

I can't get gold that cheap here, Silver I come across more at 20x though. 1/10 gold was like 248 to 250.00

That's still a really low premium for 1/10 oz. Lowest price I saw in a quick online check for generic 1/10 oz pieces was $275; 1/10 AGEs are going for well over $300.
