    Jumping ship
has nothing to do with potential numismatic values where my decision to cancel came from, but everything to do with the principal of the matter in the Mint's handling of this latest release. The Mint revealed after orders for the special 75th anniversary set were placed, having knowing planned to use at least one of the coins in another set for months before hand, when they marketed the 75th set as being minted-to-demand. While not explicitly saying minted-to-demand only applied to the number of sets of this product they would sell the coin in, the lack of clarity allowed some people to believe it meant these coins were unique to these sets and would not appear in other product offerings. The Mint should know better how mintages effects collectors buying decisions. This plus other Mint faux pas in the last few years, the marketing gimmicks and their willingness to raise the initial retail prices for these coins annually, are many counts in favor of my cancellation. I may be a minority in opting to cancel my order but I believe exercising buying power by not completing this transaction in light of the above, is the best way to send a message to the Mint regarding my dissatisfaction with their handling of the Series and product offerings made to collectors. It also shoots holes in the mint-to-demand concept, as any canceled orders this late in the game, I canceled on the 22nd, leave them holding coins they cannot sell since the window of order taking has closed. Will they have a 'fire sale' come December? Maybe... anything seems possible at the U.S. Mint, except for them convincing me to return as a customer. I didn't buy to flip, but to add to my long running collection of this series. Unfortunately, the Mint is fast ending my interest as a collector of these coins.

I feel you're punishing yourself for the marketing aspects of the mint. If you like the coins, keep them and accept that changes in marketing happen all the time. If you really feel that negatively, then cancel it, but I still don't see that it is anything that wildly unusual. Changes in minting demands happen all the time, and there was no guarantee of exclusivity promised in the sale of this set. I am not canceling, as I want the coins, and don't give a rip what the mint does or doesn't do--like they care if anybody cancels orders? This set will be nice no matter what the mintage of the regular "S" coin is, as it has a certain uniqueness. Tell me that all companies don't change their mind in terms of production of products all the time.

I have, as stated a couple times already, canceled my order for two sets. The Mint and numismatic products are (were) not like other companies and like such other products in need of marketing gimmicks to sell coins to collectors. The Mint's products, particularly this coin in the Eagle serie, was selling just fine without their meddling in marketing schemes. Only recently, notably since the Mint became Director-less, have they started becoming more and more like other companies for allowing further marketing gimmicks to enter the works, resulting in more and more manufactured collectibles. That it doesn't seem anything wildly unusual is because it's happening more and more frequently and mirrors marketing trends that people are already conditioned to react to from other aspects of their consumerist lives. These coins are not rarities and the Mint in attempting to satisfy collector interests undermines the very effort by announcing the same coin to appear in another product before these can even reach your hands, but not before they got orders lined up and know darned well the collector mind can't let go even in the face of such hypocrisy. I would be punishing myself were I unable to recognize these issues impacting the hobby and flooding it with meaningless objects, only to continue consuming the very things because of a quandary of liking something but being unable to break my material bond to take a personal stance against the principal I see being vioalted.

Although my set has yet to be shipped, it has moved to in-stock and reserved. I'm betting it will hit my credit card soon. The other two sets that I ordered later still have a ship date of late October. I guess the mint is waiting for the number of folks that will foolishly cancel orders of the sets and mint to the actual sales versus imaginary sales numbers. I'm still guessing that the set will go close to $250 by next year. It may go higher with more cancelations.

The same with my sets. they have been moved to in-stock and reserved and the charge is pending on my card. I think they will ship on Monday July 30th.

Agree with all but the "foolish." I respect anyone who bails for their principles. If you're not a seller, and don't want to be reminded of the mint's underhandedness, why would you want to know you're storing the evidence?

i'm (almost) reconsidering sending some sets in for grading.

I sold 2 RP coins for $180 or so each on ebay, and have another 4 auctions for the complete sets due to end this weekend. Those will likely end at $220. I'll probably just go with my original plan, and dump another 4 sets. Then send 10 in for grading.

Would be a lot easier just to dump all 20 of them, then buy some 70s on the open market.

Those who cancel do not do so foolishly, Phil. I've stated my reasons and someone else here suggested they cut back their order due to personal financial reasons. Also, if, as you say, the mint is waiting for the number of cancelations to come before the begin to mint they coins, then the Mint would never be able to take orders, mint the coins, assemble the sets, run it all through QC, deliver to PBGS, have them packaged per orders received and ready to ship by or near the estimated shipping date given. It would also not be possible for them to prepare the amount of blanks needed and packaging required to make these sets if they didn't pre-plan the quantities and get them going earlier. For my order I received estimated ship date of the 7/27 like many others, but canceled on 7/22. What's more likely is the Mint has, as it has done with all it's minting operations, estimated from past "demand" how much the were likely to sell and minted coins in advance. Then they adjust as orders come in if they need more, hence the later October shipping estimate given about mid way through the order window.

If you get it in the next week I'd say your best bet is list it right away and make a big deal of having it "in hand"

It's American; everyone has a right to be foolish. God knows that I've been foolish many a time. I won't be foolish this time though. Here are the reasons.

#1. It is already selling for over $230 on ebay. After discounting selling costs, you can make about $50 on the set by just selling it.

#2. The low mintage will likely increase the value of the reverse proof to over the mint's selling price. Who really cares about the other coin anyway but it is now free?

#3. Whoever ordered the set, is a collector of ASE's, a seller of ASE's, or buying it as a gift for someone else. If you're a collector of ASE's, you must have the reverse proof. If you're a seller, you'll make money. If your buying it for someone else, it doesn't matter because they will pretend to like it whether or not the really like it.

#4. Based on the #3, anyone who returns the set is making a mistake. It would be even a mistake if you received it as a gift and returned it since you could make more by selling it on ebay.

#5. Returning it because you dislike the practices of the seller is weird and a also a mistake. It is the US Mint. They have been doing the same thing for years. If you don't like the mint's practices, don't buy from them in the first place and thus you won't have to cancel the order. I will sometimes question their practices, but it isn't beyond the pail like some of the selling practices that I see on TV.

I ordered mine at around 2:00 pm on the last day of sales. It was originally expected to ship at the end of Oct. now it's saying it's in the process of being shipped and was supposed to be shipped yesterday. I haven't checked to see if they charged my credit card yet. I hope it does ship soon so I don't even have to think about receiving one that someone sent back. :)

The two sets that I ordered on the last day moved also. They are in the process of shipping with the other set that I ordered on day one. It looks like they made enough sets to ship to everyone.
