I really like the coins of Rhegion with their facing lion heads. Here is another one I found recently. This one has a very nice green patina and a little original dirt still in the crevices. This is pretty close to how it looks in hand. BRUTTIUM, Rhegion, 351-280 BC. Æ20, 6.24 gm Obverse: Facing lion scalp. Reverse: Laureate head of Apollo right; uncertain symbol to left. References: HN Italy 2534a; cf. SNG ANS 687, Sear 684 Another example of the same type (with my over exposed photo). Look how different the style of the lion is on this one. And a smaller tetras from JA: Post your coins of Rhegion! John
Very lovely... I really need one of these. My lone coin from Rhegion doesn't have a lion scalp, but it does have quite an interesting obverse with jugate heads of Apollo and Artemis. BRUTTIUM, Rhegion AE Triens. 11.82g, 27.6mm. BRUTTIUM, Rhegion, circa 215-150 BC. SNG München 1673; HN Italy 2550. O: Jugate heads right of Apollo, laureate, and Artemis, wearing stephane; [Θ] or [phiale] behind. R: PHΓI-NΩN, Tripod, •••• to outer right.
The bronzes are a reasonable way to get a 20mm facing lion coin. They run $200-400. The Tetradrachms on the other hand are rare and $5000 and up for nice vf or better.

Wow Theodosius, that's a sweet OP-winner (cool green eye-appeal) Ummm, I have an AR version of your OP-type ... BRUTTIUM, Rhegion. AR Litra Circa 445-435 BC Diameter: 13 mm Weight: 0.71 grams Obverse: Facing lion’s scalp Reverse: RECI within wreath Reference: Herzfelder p. 89, B; HN Italy 2485 Oh, an I also have an amazingly sweet example from my Secret Santa (secret Gandalf) Bruttium, Carthage Occupation AR 1/2 Shekel
MYLASA, CARIA AR Tetartemorion OBVERSE: Lion's head left with reversed foreleg below REVERSE: Lion's scalp facing, flanked by leg on both sides, in incuse circle Struck at Mylasa, 392-376 BC .2g, 6mm SNG Keckman I 837-846 (lion left)
I've seen these lion coins before, and every time I see them they just look so cool. Is there other coins with a front facing lion?
Yes, there are several other types including this: Islands off Ionia, SAMOS, AR Didrachm, 6.57 gm, circa 310-300 BC. Obverse: Lion scalp Reverse NANISKOS, Forepart of an ox charging right, SA (followed by M?) Very rare. Barron 22,6. HGC 1229. Ex Jean Elsen Brussel V, 1981 John

I didn't recognize the Apollo type. Though I seldom venture into expensive bronze, I'll have to be on the lookout.
Need a little help here. Can't find the attribution for this Æ Bruttium coin. At https://collections.mfa.org/objects/3751 there is a similar one - but the reverse inscription is inverted on mine (or theirs) and they don't give any attribution (SNG number) 20 x 22 mm, 9.51 g Bruttium, Rhegion, ca 270 - 203 BC (3rd century BC) Obv.: Laureate Head of Apollo right; border of dots Rev.: tripod with omphalos between legs; border of dots P H Γ I / NΩN Any ideas?
Tetradrachm of Rhegion 414-387 B.C. Rutter HN 2496 21MM diameter. I remember seeing one of these at an Bertolami Auction in Munich some years ago.I was so impressed that I had to buy one. It seems that because of the relief the lions head seems to change expression as you tit the coin forwards or back. It is a neat coin
