Yup, I bought two Romans from my favourite coin-buddy ... I loved this portrait-style, so I jumped all over it!! ($76 US, delivered) I already have an example of this guy, but again, I loved the portrait-type so I pulled the trigger!! Please feel free to unload your Maximianus-examples (*self-edit*) Maximianus AE Follis (Cyzicus mint) Date: 305 AD Diameter: 28.5 mm Weight: 8.44 grams Obverse: D N MAXIMIANO BEATISSIMO SEN AVG - Bust of Maximianus, holding mappa and branch Reverse: PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QVIES AVGG - Providentia and Quies facing each other. * between, S / F in fields, KD in exergue References: RIC 28 b => 29 mm and 8.5 grams => it's a fair-sized and well-centered coin (I'm lovin' it!!)
Since the PC police have banned the word "fat", I will have to say that is one "ample" dude. Very nice. Looks like they had a hard time fitting both Max and all the legends on this coin. Outstanding little brother.
A Serdica example here Maximianus, Abdication Follis Serdica mint, 1st officina, AD 305-306 DN MAXIMIANO FELICISSIMO SEN AVG, laureate bust right, wearing imperial mantle, holding mappa and olive branch PROVIDENTIA DEORVM QUIES AVGG, Quies and Providentia, facing each other, S | F in field, .SM.SD. at exergue, officina A 10,70 gr Ref : Cohen #489, RCV # 13408 (220), RIC VI # 15b Q
Sorry Bing, neither fat nor ample are appropriate in our PC world, "circumferencly challenged" is the right expression for what makes the difference here Well, just my two cents though Q
cool stevex, i don't have one of this style. yours is awesome as well Q. here's my favorite coin of maximianus ( i only have 2 of this guy). that's quite a legend on those coins! any idea what "BEATISSIMO" refers to? man, the wagon is starting to wear on me!
Mine is very average compared to you guys. Maximianus Coin: Bronze Follis IMP MAXIMIANVS AVG - Laureate, curaissed left GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI - Genius standing facing, head left, modius on head, nude but for chlamys over left shoulder, patera in right hand over lighted plain altar, cornucopiae in left A in right field Mint: Lyons, Lugdunum (301-303 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 9.33g / 27mm / - References: RIC VI, 250, 113b The only other one I have has a hole in it, I was considering putting it on my key chain.
Oh, and here is my other Maximianus example ... $24 (delivered, from New Jersey!!) => one of my early and "only" e-bay scores!! Maximianus, Silvered Antoninianus 286-305 BC Maximianus & Victory
I like these Senior Augustus issues... another type I'd scoop up if the right one came along. Great score.
Two Mad Max ancient coins in one day. this old boy looks like ate to much pasta! Where i come from they call that portly.. Sweeet coin my Friend..
Terrific coins guys!!! And here at my homestead and prowling grounds, such persons are referred to as 'pleasantly plump', or as in the case of my cousin, nicknamed "CHUBBY"---and he has a tattoo to go along with it LOL My 'Mad Max' is rather routine as well...but I'll post it later on .....
Good coin, Steve, and an interesting type. Mine are more run-of-the-mill, but I got them both for ten bucks apiece.
I like the 'wave' cutting off the obverse portrait. I haven't seen that before (at least not where it stuck out at me...)
I don't have any as amusing as your new coin, but here are a few from my hoard. Maximianus, 286-305 AD AE follis, 9.9 gm, 27 mm Obv: IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS PF AVG, laureate head right Rev: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left holding cornucopia and pouring from a patera; XXI in left field, E in right field, ALE in exergue Mint: Alexandria Ref: RIC VI 30b Two of seven Maximian potin tetradrachms from a very fun CNG lot (the "CoverGirl" coins... most were wearing makeup, now removed).
