Here's a June 02, 2005 link to the same story: http://ancientlosttreasures.yuku.co...n-Coins-used-as-dollars-by-stupid-locals.html
Golly, those ASE have been circulating in the islands since at least June 2005 and it hasn't been reported in any of the coin publications or national media. And the website is labeled Trustworthiness: unsatisfactory Has anybody else in cointalk mentioned finding ASE's circulating in the Islands? Call me paranoid but I'm thinking scam here.
Could be but the link he posted is marked as unsatisfactory by WOT. When I get some time I'll scope it out completely then report back to the thread. here's another link from '05 http://www.caribbeanmag.com/caribbe...lion-used-as-currency-there-t2339.html?t=2339
CoinDragon joined CoinTalk around the same time the "ASE in circulation thread" appeared about five years ago.
Sounds like a scam. Imma call a person I know who has visits the island every year. Well see what he has to say.
I call bullsh it. Everyone on the planet that is dialed into the idea of money, in whatever form they are calling money/currency; knows what an oz of silver is worth if they care about it and something like this would surface remarkably fast. Despite the random 90% coin in change here or there i can not imagine any organization or entity buying ASE's at silver cost and circulating them. There is currently no benefit. so i'm saying this isn't happening.
Every street hustler and bank teller would've snagged all of those coins years ago, had they existed.
