Congrats on getting the VanBuren's......especially before the price increase. :) I am sorry that you also received a "defective" coin. I think you should definitely send it back. You are paying a lot for these coins and to accept anythng less than perfect is not acceptable. The only thing that I would be concerned with is will the mint allow you to return the coin for an even swap and not charge you the price difference? I would call the mint up tonight and see if they will swap you out. The key would be whether or not you can convince them that that the coin is damaged. They will swap out a "damaged" coin at even cost. Either way, I would return the coin and accept nothing less than perfect on this coin even if it means that you have to wait several months to be able to purchase it again. The mint defect on my coin cost me the unc version and I am not happy with that, but I will wait until the price comes down again which I feel confident that it will. Heck.... we have a year to buy the coin, so its just a matter of time before the price comes down.

So we can demand MS 70 and Proof 70 coins from the Mint now?

Yeah...I was wondering the same thing. I would think I should get a suitable replacement at no charge...but this IS the federal government we're talking about.

How did it "cost you the unc version"? and...

What happens if the price doesn't come down in the next year?

I decided that I did not want to return the first coin and wait around for them to process the return and ship me out a second coin. Knowing my luck, the price would have jumped and I would have been out of that coin too. So I went ahead and ordered the second proof. It cost me the UNC version, because the $600 that I would have used to buy the unc was then tied up buying the second proof. Now that I have shipped back the proof, I will wait until the mint credits my card back. If the price drops which I hope it does, I will then take that money and buy the unc.

If the price of gold does not drop, then the only thing I can suggest is to buy before the price of gold goes up again to the next tier. At that point, we will all be in the same boat and then we will have to make some tough decisions. How big a die hard fans are we? I guess we will find out. :goofer::rolling:

Yeah...I'm getting a bit tapped out, myself. With my Sarah's on the way, I got a year before HAVE TO buy again...but I really want another set of Anna's (I think she will be the new "key"). I project her final Unc numbers to be in the 3600-3800 range...pretty low for a US Mint Gold coin.

I'm putting together a spreadsheet of all the FS coins weekly sales numbers and overlaying them by 1) empirical date, and 2) week from first issue (Week #1 to Week #52). I hope to quantify the effects of price increases and seasonal variations to project final sales numbers (I got WAY too much time on my hands :D).

One observation I made so far...maybe I should have seen this already...is that every ten (10) weeks, the Mint posts their "returns" in the weekly sales numbers. The numbers for that week are almost always negative.

Some of those returns are from folks like you and me...receivers of damaged goods. The rest MAY be from folks that order in volume, cherrypick the best coins, and return the rest. Who knows...pretty good conspiracy theory, anyway.
