Spain The first European coin with a date, 1204. Spain at the time was in the middle of ridding itself of its Muslim inhabitants. At the time this coin was struck, over half the country by land mass, was for the most part, Muslim free. This coin, an Obol along with the Dinero, were supposedly issued to commemorate this accomplishment. Spain at the time was using a calendar that had been introduced by Augustus Caesar, the Es-Safar. It was introduced in 38B.C. So while the date on the coin is 1204 (Roman Numerals, MCCIIII) it was actually struck 1166 A.D. using our calendar system we use today.
