Most of us know that you should never clean coins. But looking at the picture I posted, I think most of us can agree this is a time when it's the lesser of two evils. The reason I want to bother is it's silver, so whether I keep it or sell it, I want it to look halfway decent. What would you recommend to get the gunk off?

See if acetone will remove it all.

Pharmacy or Hardware store, probably will have to ask for it as it may be kept behind the counters.

Thanks. I'll have to try that. I don't know what it is covered with.

another option is xylol, it's another organic solvent that will not due much harm.

You could try electrolysis .. but it sounds like acetone or xylol would be less complicated.

Acetone is accepted by most as non harmful to the coin form of cleaning. When you pick up the acetone get some nitrile gloves as it is not good to human flesh. Use a glass contanier to soak (it eats most forms of plastic) with good ventilations and it is highly flamable.

Also if your skin feels cold while using acetone, that means you probably spilled some on that area and should go wash it off. Honestly I've never heard it was bad for you because I've got it all over me and I'm fine. But it's best not to intentionally pour it on yourself, seeing as it dries your skin like crazy. And one last note, do not inhale it. You will feel sick, which is no fun. Have fun. :)

thanks for the instructions. It sounds like it might be more trouble than its worth, but I'll check it out eventually.

Surprised it wasnt mentioned, but dont use Nail Polish Remover as it usually isnt 100% acetone.

will the use of acetone detract from the value?

Not if done correctly, but get a little over zealous and you have a ruined coin.
