I keep a couple of inexpensive scales for travel. Great for estate sales, auctions, etc... I keep a 500g calibration weight handy as well and calibrate monthly. Those little things can get way out of whack when they bounce around in a brief case.

You can get a cheap one for around $10 for travel. They work pretty well for most things. I keep a nicer one at home.

Even for gold, down to a tenth of a gram is fairly accurate. Considering 1/10th of a gram of pure gold is $4 either way - you get close enough.

I use a scale that at least shows tenths. 14ktgold.JPG Scrap gold is a little different, to find it's value you multiply the total weight by the purity which in this case is 14kt, so 93 grams times .585 (14kt is 58.5% and 18kt is 75%) is 54.405 grams that at $1222.40 an oz is worth $2138.41 and since I usually only pay 80% for scrap, I would pay $1710.73 for that much 14kt.
