This may have been posted already, but Paradise Mint has sets of NGC 70's for $2,699.99 and NGC 69's for $1,299.99.

"Advanced option to the right of the search bar. Then on the page that comes up, check the box for completed listings and do your search."

    That did it.
    Thanks

I don't think so, the "FS" is all about when PCGS receives the coins, not when you personally receive the coins. So if you want the FS label, you have to get the box to them by Dec 7th. Any coins received after that date will NOT get FS, or at least that's what the rep at PCGS just told me.

Right from the link in my original post:

"There are two ways PCGS can verify if a coin was shipped out from the mint
within the first 30 days. The first is when a coin is shipped to PCGS from the
customer with a postmarked date before the cutoff date for that particular coin.
In this example, PCGS only needs the coin to be mailed in. No extra mint
packaging is needed (i.e. boxes, certificates, etc.).

The second way PCGS can verify that a coin qualifies for First Strike
designation is when a customer does not open the sealed package that came from
the mint. In this instance, the package must remain completely sealed and
unopened. The customer then can send that whole package in to PCGS and the
receiving department will go by the postmarked date from the mint. As long as
this date is prior to the cutoff date for that particular coin, it qualifies for
    first strike.
    "

Well, that's not what the phone rep at PCGS is saying. But hey, if this is the way you think it works, I'll support you on it. Either way, it's a moot point for me, mine are already in the grading process.

"So if you want the FS label, you have to get the box to them by Dec 7th"

and spend an additional $18.00 per coin for the FS designation. NGC does not charge for the "Early Release" designation.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that if you call back and speak to a different rep, making sure to specify that you are asking about sending in sealed sets that were originally mailed to you by the Mint before the cutoff date, you'd get a different answer.

I'm going by the rules posted by Don Willis, President of PCGS, here:

    Link

"Standard First Strike rules apply to these coins"

By the PCGS 25th Anniversary set page here:

    Link

"First Strike cutoff date: December 7, 2011

    ...

Additional First Strike submission guidelines may be found at www.pcgs.com/services/firststrike.html"

And that link stating that: "The second way PCGS can verify that a coin qualifies for First Strike designation is when a customer does not open the sealed package that came from the mint. In this instance, the package must remain completely sealed and unopened. The customer then can send that whole package in to PCGS and the receiving department will go by the postmarked date from the mint. As long as this date is prior to the cutoff date for that particular coin, it qualifies for first strike."

I don't have a dog in this fight as mine won't be sent for grading btw.

Good luck with your submission, may 70s rain down on you from above! :)

Yes I have noticed it also. Yesterday sealed boxes with 5 sets was bringing $4300 + with no problem today they are just bringing in over 4000. Time will tell.

Nice graph and thanks for sharing. Would it be hard to do one for 5 sealed sets. I bet a lot of folks around here would be curious to see that one.

Over? The set still commands more than double the mint issue price. Greedy remorse?

The slow down could also be caused by people waiting for graded coins coming back from the TPG's. A surge of them shold be hitting the market soon. Collectors might be holding back just to see if the price differential is modest or not. If your going to spend $800 on a non-graded set, why not wait and buy the PF/PR 69's for just a little bit more? Especially if 70 sets are really impossible to come by.

They definitely took a dip earlier, but then the last 5 sales of sealed boxes of 5 tonight were:

    $4,290
    $4,295
    $4,199
    $4,299
    $4,255

Not sure if it's just that Friday afternoon is a lousy time to end Ebay auctions? I don't do much business there, so it's an honest question.

The gap between sealed and open boxes has definitely widened since the graded sets started to hit the market. Seems to be $100-150 difference for single sets which is a lot bigger than at the start of the week.

I broke up a set to see what it would get and here are my results.

    Reverse proof - $337
    S mint mark - $262
    Box - $40

I kept the other three coins I guess worth about $120. So total is $759 which is about the same as what other sets are going for. I looked at completed listings and my coins are pretty much the lowest they have gone on ebay since release...lol. I don't know why (100% feedback), but I still more than doubled my money, so I'm happy.

    I would expect the following:
The open, cherry picked sets will gradually decline in price.
The sealed boxes will hold value or go up in price.
The graded sets will peak fast and fall (especially the NGCs), and PCGS sets will command a 30% premium over NGC.

    30% premium based on what?

  20. sodude

Based on the tighter supply of 70s and PCGS's popularity.

The 2011 and 2010 silver proofs (Kennedy, quarter sets, etc) generally show a 30% difference between the companies.

I completely agree that PCGS holds a premium over NGC when it comes to pre-1960's coins, however I do not believe this premium applies when it comes to these ultra modern coins. In fact, it may be just the opposite way. NGC is considered by many to be much more consistent when it comes to grading this class of coins. I don't know anything about Kennedy's or quarter sets which may be as you describe, but I am told by my clients that ASE's in NGC are preferred over PCGS. Btw, I'm not a fan of either ASE's or Kennedy's or quarter sets or really any coins made after 1978 so I just go where the people ask me to go when it comes to these sorts of things.
