With the new window of opportunity for ordering this product, I'm not really sure what the rush to order these is all about. Day one is not as important as with past releases, what with some 4-weeks worth of order opportunity ahead of us. IF there is a mad rush, it may just be that people are accustomed to responding in the way they have in the past. Maybe it will be the same as before for those aiming to get coins as soon as the coins start shipping for flipping and/or grading designations.

However, this time could be much different on release day. Calm would be welcome, as would such calm have a quelling effect on the general rants we hear on forums about log jams after the day-one pandemonium.

With all that said, do we know any details or estimates about actual shipping dates for this product once orders are placed? I am curious if the Mint will ship ASAP, before the window of opportunity to order closes -or- will the Mint withhold orders for the next month, and only after the window of order opportunity closes, will they start shipping? I personally would like to seem them only take orders at this time and deliver after July 5th. That would seem a more realistic way to suggest the orders defined the mintage and that no extras were being minted.

I am also curious how exchanges will work for this product and how many extra coins they keep on hand for exchanges, if that is even allowed for this product. That alone would mean they have to mint a certain quantity above the number of orders placed if they intend to allow for exchanges. Will they account and destroy left overs later on, those returned or not used for exchanges?

I guess we can all watch for the 'what's your order number' game to start up soon, so we can see what the pace of ordering is really like and start estimating mintage from now until the opportunity to order ends.

  5. I agree that calm would be welcomed, but my guess is that plenty of people will be online at noon simply out of habit or some desire to get in early. I will even go as far saying that some will do so simply so they can post their order number in online forums which will help incite a frenzy. Perception is key here. If you are a flipper, you want people to get excited about some perceived notion that getting in early gets you your coins first, better coins, or perhaps even an early potential error. Let the games begin. TC

I'll be watching the Mint "counter" with a passive to mild interest. I do need to buy three sets...eventually, but I see no reason to rush. I think those who need bragging rights are probably willing to endure the long wait times associated with the first day of any release. My greatest concern at this point is that I might forget to order before the deadline.

From the mint press room dated May 2............

"There will be no household order limit, with sets being produced to meet demand. Pricing will be finalized close to the set's on-sale date of June 7, 2012, and will be based on the market price of silver at the time. The United States Mint has established a four-week ordering window, beginning June 7 at noon (ET) and ending July 5 at 5 p.m. (ET). Orders will begin shipping in late July."

I don't plan on doing this, but I hope some people try to order today and report back regarding the performance of the Mint's ordering system on a steady, but non-taxing day. Don't forget, the earlier you order, the greater your chances of getting 1 of the first sets off the press plus 1 of the first sets shipped.

I'm in a business where we number the units in each lot. If the mint were to put a unit number of each coin set minted and subsequently sold in the order of the minting unit number, it might make sense. Since they sell all the first issues to HSN and the Coin Fault, it makes no sense at all. I only order early to avoid getting the returns from others.

This why I will order today as well. I hate sloppy seconds. If someone gets a nicked up coin and has to return it, it should be melted and not remailed out to the guy that orders last in early July.

I've never understood this claim. Why would it be in the Mint's interest to keep their products in the order that they produce them? I have always imagined that the Mint has a room full of pallets loaded with the current product and someone orders and a guy walks into the room grabs the nearest box and ships it. OK maybe not quite that simplistic but having been in manufacturing I know the first items produced aren't always the first items shipped. I just can't imagine that there is any real correlation between when something is produced and when it is shipped. When you consider that they also send these out to distribution centers, it is anybody’s guess where the first sets produced end up. :dead-horse:

We get a glimpse of the US Mint's new robo-packing operation in this weeks Coin World, click the image on the side of the article and scroll through the 8 images to see how things proceed once put in lenses in the case of proof/mint sets.

Let us know how it goes then. I'm curious how the process goes on a non-taxing, non-light day.

Though I'm going to order a set for myself, I see no reason to rush. And I'm pretty sure the site will be slow today due to people trying to get their orders in early.

I agree, but there are many who believe this. It is also the reason the entire concept of "First Strike" is total fantasy.
