Any one planning to have these graded? If you can only send the unopened box to TGP, how can you tell whether the coins that you receive are worth grading?

 

I don't think you will have to worry about that too much, as most silver eagles grade at least a 69. The production quality on them tends to be very good and there's probably no reason to expect it to change. Personally, I wouldn't spend the time and money to have them graded. I don't know what the statistics are for the 2011 silver eagle proof 70, for example, but I do know a coin dealer told me they were handing out the 70 grade on 2010 silver proofs like candy. Hence, why bother to have it graded. Why not just keep the original integrity of the set in the presentation box. I think it will be much more attractive than having 5 sterile-looking slabs. However, what someone might consider doing is purchasing 2 sets; keeping 1 intact and sending 1 for grading. This is just 1 person's opinion, but to your question, I would bet the coins in the set will be "grade-worthy".

 

The reason I was concerned is because two ATB 5oz coins I received directly from the mint had scratches on GW.

 

Unfortunately, you won’t get a chance to return any defects for better coins; due to a fast sellout, the Mint will only return previous returns to you. Too bad, the Mint could easily make a few extras to cover returns and then melt the remainder.

 

I know what you mean about those. The quality was all over the place on the collector's version coins and even more so on the bullion coins. The silver eagles, however, have tended to have very good production quality over time. I'm not the Mint's biggest fan, but I do think, in this case, you will be okay. I can't wait to see the reverse proof and the San Francisco uncirculated from that set.

The credit card is a good thought. Check and make sure your CC isn't expiring. It could be difficult to try and update on the 27th. If the site is slow, it can take forever just to get the next window to open. Wouldn't you hate to get it ordered, and a week later you get notice that your card expired and the order cancelled? That would be a heckuva note.

Hoping they can manipulate the price of silver within the next 2 weeks so they can justify the outrageous pricing no doubt

I'm excited, i'm gonna get as many as I can I'm still thinking a price of $379 but with the recent pricing adjustment perhaps we are all in for a suprise? ... $299?

 

I like closer to the 5 ounce atb's ($230), with a little more premium for the Mint's efforts, say $250. Heck, that's almost a $100 over spot!

 

If we look at the current prices for the various Eagle categories, let's say the bullion will be $40.00, the burnished will be $50.00 each, the proof will be $60.00 and the reverse proof will be (just guessing) $70.00. Now, we can't forget the fancy box, so let's say $25.00. That gets us to $295.00. I think that is a good and fair price, but is it realistic? Meh.

We probably shouldn't forget the last time the Mint did a special eagle set, three coins sold for $100.00 and silver was $12.50 an ounce. That tells me spot has little, if anything, to do with their pricing on their special releases.
