I like the fact i can check the cert #. I also like them protected. some time damage is obvious but some times not.
Is anyone else that bought 1 order of 5 sets thinking of keeping them in their original packaging unopened? This seems to be the least talked about option and would be the most difficult to do! I can't imagine not being tempted to have a look at these beauties, but the potential future outcome of keeping them completely original is intriguing.
"Even on authentic slabs, there are differences in grade and desirability." of course ! thats the whole idea !
I meant you can lay out 3 1881s MS 64 Morgans PCGS slabbed coins side by side, and there can be considerable price differences for them. The whole "sight unseen" trading notion is bogus, anyone buying a coin because of the slab is pretty much guaranteeing themselves they are getting a low end of a grade, or an overgraded coin. Anyone not recognizing that, and not recognizing that price lists are average, and very well could be too much money for a particular coin, are setting themselves up to be fleeced. Chris
sounds like you like raw coins. thats great ! i dont. so you should not try to dictate your opinion on me.
like i said i buy coins not slabs. and i never go by the price guide, but i prefer slabed coins for many reasons. if you want to be a monkey and do what you see others doing go ahead.
??? I was simply trying to say that a collector should know how to grade and identify problems regardless of whether they like slabs or not. None of these points mentioned anything about slabbed versus raw coins. If you buy slabs and believe you are guaranteed of getting the same quality coin in identical graded slabs, then you are sorely mistaken. That was my only point.
i buy my coins from dealers and coin shows. and i buy my coins for me no one else. definitely not for you. matter of fact i disagree with the way you think and i think you have already been fleeced!
I am getting better at identifying problems. you have to even with graded coins.even when it comes to toning i see some graded coins that have a high grade but are ugly. of course some people like toning and some dont. there are many different ways to collect. you have your way and i have mine. but you are nobody to me to tell me i'm a sheep.
Sy - I am not much of a slabber in general. I see the advantage to slabbing but I'm more about the coin than how it is packaged. I still have several 2006 ASE sets I have yet to slab if I ever do have them slabbed. I haven't even opened the shipping boxes yet. I hope they are in there. I have a 1909-S VDB "UNSABBED!" I know, heresy! So I'm not that into paying a bunch of guys a lot of money to stare at my collection and give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down based on who knows what. I have been collecting ASEs since they came out and have three complete sets minus a coin here and there. I'm still looking for the right coins to fill those few holes I have left at the right price but I can wait. I find completing a set sort of anticlimactic so I tend to drag it out as long as I can but sometimes those coins just come along at the right price. So, as for slabbing, meh!
Ok I got my order in at 12:01 CDT my order number begins 3833xxxx They have moved my ship date twice it is now 11/13/11 and on hold! Reading all these comments has got my a lil freaked! I only purchased 1 set! Do I need to worry?
To Grade or Not to Grade? Just want to know why some are saying not to grade and some are grading? I'm talking about all 5 coins... Not just pulling the two special coins.
I just realized the eBay listing that are selling for $2,500.00 and above are for five sets not just one set.
