Hoax as in someone's being funny, or should I say not so funny! I've put $200 aside for this and hopefully it won't be much higher!fingers crossed! I thought about taxtime to get one but I am afraid of of what they will skyrocket to by that time!!The ladie I spoke with didn't say hoax though that was mine! But clearly the mint had not annouced a price was what she said!

Yup but when you click it the item page itself says TBD, obviously the mint can change the price anytime up to the sale.

Yep, with the interest in this set, it sure would be nice if The Mint clarifies all soon, in writing.

The price will not be $229 because they do not set the PM coin prices until very close to the release

I'm trying to determine what it is that needs clarifying. From the information Greg received, we know:

    1. The mintage will be 100,000.

    2. The price, as of now, will not be $229.95.

    3. The price will most likely be determined October 26th at the earliest in order to reflect the then price of silver.

I might be missing something, but that seems pretty clear to me.

Have the Mint's offerings become so uninspired that we get super-excited about an offering in which 60% of the offering is already readily available? The answer is probably "yes, they have."

Do I want to purchase a set? Of course. Do I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread? Definitely not. To me, only 2 of the 5 coins merit any real attention. Of those 2, only 1 offers anything new, as we already have a reverse proof Eagle. So, the issue becomes, how significant is an uncirculated Eagle with an "S" mint mark? I think the answer to that question indicates how much focus and attention this set deserves. That's just my opinion. For me, it all comes down to the fancy box. Just kidding.

Well, I have never bought a product fromt he US Mint, but seeing as how my son is 4 weeks old, I think I may have to buy this set. It should be interesting.

Do you have to enroll at the mint to buy there, or could I do it all on the 27th?

From the information we received, nothing is clear untill it's in writing in The Mint's ad. So far we have a price of $229.95 and a TBD and we have a press release that states they "plan" to limit it to 100k and an ad that says nothing about a 100k limit. If that's clear to anyone, I'd like to enter into a contract with them.

    Chris,

I would definitely set up the account before the 27th, as the site could well crash a few times that day due to the assumed demand for this item and you could be SOL. If you do decide to wait until that day to register, do it well before noon. Also, set yourself up for the "express checkout" feature, as that will save you some time upon ordering as well as improve your ability to get through the order process.

    Quarterguy,

I think you may be very disappointed if you focus on the $229.95 price. We know the proof is selling at $60.00 and the uncirculated-w is selling at $50.00. Assuming the uncirculated-s will sell at that price also and the bullion is worth $40.00, the price is already $200.00 and we haven't even talked about the reverse proof and the fancy box yet. Realistically, I think the number will be closer to $295.00 and probably more.

Also, if the Mint is indeed going to produce only 40% of the 2006 Anniversary Set mintage, I would think we will not be seeing any bargain price, but rather a greater premium. I guess we'll know for sure in about 8 days.

I don’t count on anything from the Mint until it’s in writing. At today’s price for silver, the Mint would make a profit on the set (even with the fancy China made box) at 229.95. So, all I’m saying is, clarify what’s going on in writing in their ad and website, by getting rid of conflicting statements and prices.

What's silly is not the listings themselves as they always pop up when an offering like this comes around, but the fact that the first link you posted, that guy has already sold 4 at that price... now THAT is ridiculous!

Ebay shouldn't allow these types of auctions. It's one of the reasons I don't like to do business there.

  20. That may just be part of the scam. Just have friends bid and later cancel out with no repercussions. It creates a perceived demand and intensifies the hype among the uninformed. TC

I just know I want a set, just 1. I don't care if the mintage is 100,000 or 1,000,000. I don't care what the price is (within reason, of course.) I'm addicted to the Mint's cocaine and I will freely admit it.
