1987 penny error?

I came across this 1987 penny with what looks like a "D" next to the date. I know that mint marks are usually below the date. Is this an error of some kind? I am only a novice coin collector and know nothing about this coin and could find nothing on the internet concerning a mint mark error on the 1987 penny. When you look at it straight on, it just kind of looks like a dot but when you look at it from an angle it looks like it should be a "D". Could this be worth anything?

Without a picture it is just a guess. Most likely scenarios are a zinc blister that looks something like an 8 or someone stamped it with a number "8" stamp. Both would be considered damage and the coin would be worth only face value.
