1986-d penny with mint mark on head

    I found this penny roll searching with an extra mint mark on his head. Does anyone know what this is called? photo(39).jpg photo(40).jpg photo(41).jpg

    That's a fairly beat up Lincoln Cent. The "mintmark" on Lincoln's head looks like a gouge (although it is hard to tell in the blurry photo) and just happens to resemble a 'D' to you. A mintmark (on that coin) would be raised, not incuse.

    Is it alright to clean this coin up? If I do I can take a better picture than it can be clearly seen it's a raised d

    It's a 1986. It is bronze plated zinc. Bronze plated zinc cents are subject to bubbles and zinc rot. What you have here is a bubble in the bronze plating that has collapsed. It's just a coincidence that it looks like a "D". No amount of cleaning and no amount of variation in lighting or positioning in the photography of your coin will change that. Spend it. Fast. Before it rots away totally.

    Or send it to Mike Diamond. Maybe (I hope) he'll tell you I am wrong.
