Shipped "registered air mail" 10-25 days. Not from Utah. You can scam alot of people in a month.

The seller left in some of the original auction info (back when they were shipping directly from Fujian, China).

    So this is my theory:
After eBay removed the "replica" category, the Chinese sellers had a few options... they could sell directly from their websites (little traffic and unknown to most buyers), they could list in the legitimate category and ship from China (but this would cause a giant red flag and most auctions would be removed), or they could set up U.S. based accounts and partially rewrite their auction descriptions. Now it's possible (as I stated above) that the coins were shipped in bulk to a U.S. address where the account was set up and shipped from there, or maybe (as m60 noted), the coins are still being shipped from China. This would account for the 10-25 delivery time.

In my opinion, I think the real sad part is many of the buyers DO know exactly what they are buying and are planning to flip them. I mean really, a '89 cc for $50.

The quality may also be a bit better than what Books is suggesting. Give me a bit and I will post a '79 CC. J-Man special. Quality is not perfect and would not fool an expert, but pretty good.

    Here is a J-man special. Price $30.00
Most of the scratches and fingerprints are a result of my poor handling, I show it around quite oftem to show folks they need to be careful about fakes. It has been dropped more then once.

It is a high quality fake. What are the signs that is was made by J-man?

Well, I know it is a J-man piece because I bought it from him.

Like I said though, the piece is only pretty good.

From the photo there is only one thing I can say that definitively tells you that it is a fake. The die pairing is not correct. Look at the CC on the reverse. There is no VAM that matches that CC on an '79. All but one of the reverses has the CC off-centered. The one that has a centered CC, has the CC spaced much wider. The J-man most likely used a common CC reverse as the "model".

In hand it gets a bit easier to tell. First is the reeding. It just doesn't feel right. It is raised too much and feels rough.

The coin is also not silver, or at least not all silver. (real silver for $30, no profit there) and the coin is light in weight. I can't remember the exact number but it was off more than enough to leave no doubt. Even without a scale, you can tell it is not silver by the ring test.

That is it in a nutshell, some may disagree about me even buying it, but the way I see it, knowledge is king and If I share the knowledge, it is a win.

Yep... I remember the thread I started back in September of 2011... looks like the same '79-CC:

Yup, I have seen the same die pair on at least two other examples, as soon as you look at the CC you know exactly where it came from. It is like a Chinese Overton Variety :)

I'm really glad this thread was posted. My father left me a voice mail yesterday that he bought some Morgan CC's for $49. I sent him an email today telling him that the ones he bought are likely fake.

I sent him a link to this thread so he can see that there are great people such as yourselves out there warning others of these scams.

I'm sure he'll be reading this thread tonight, so hopefully this will help him become a better ebayer since he's new to that shark pool. Besides not buy from ebay all together if there's any advice those would like to share to him feel free. I sent him an email that will hopefully make him into a better ebay shopper.

And dad, sign up to this forum. There are lots of great people here sharing a wealth of knowledge and are more than willing to help you with any questions you may have.

    Thanks guys

    Are these collectable?

It appears ebay canceled the auction, and now he's working on getting refunded.

I am not sure if you meant that tongue in cheek or not. :)

They are not collectable now but a thought popped in my head. I do not think the Chinese will be counterfeiting forever, they are still an emerging nation, but as they become more mainstrean in the future, they will likley begin to start policing themselves. I really don't thing thye will want the stigma of being counterfeiters and crooks. Maybe 100 years from now after the bogus coins have long stopped being struck, they will be collectable like contemporary counterfeits are today. Currently there are plenty of contemporary counterfeit Bust Half Dollars that are worth more than their genuine counterparts.

    Just a rambling thought......

Actually I was being sarcastic, but you are right, it does give one pause for thought.
