Another year draws to an end and again there are coins that have moved to new homes. Please share some of your coins that have made a journey to a new collection in 2021. This is the fourth annual version and you can see the other threads here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coins-that-went-goodbye-2020-version.371384/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coins-that-went-goodbye-2019-version.351371/ https://www.cointalk.com/threads/coins-that-went-goodbye.328613/
Never saw this thread in years past, This year has been a good year, I haven't had to sell any. First time in years. Edit, haven't had to sell anything for a couple years. I have found more steady work in the past two years, I can't even explain.
First time seeing this thread as well. Those Mexican Real and Swiss 5 Batzen are beauties. I haven't let any coins go lately, but I did sell off a lot of my US series (in Dansco albums) about a year ago to fund some new purchases.
I'll jump on that 'I've never seen these threads either' bandwagon. Nevertheless, I've got every coin I ever bought, found, was gifted, traded, etc. I'm a sucker for forming emotional attachments to shiny inanimate objects. Oftentimes to a fault.
That 1809 1-real was a real stunner. So was the Morgan. The Kyrgyzstan was really cool as well. I've not had time to compile a list of my "bygones" from this year, let alone my purchases.
I only sell because there's someone out there willing to pay more for it than I did! And it was a hobby for the winter months when I'm laid off. I just secured me a year round job that pays the same as what I make now. Ends up being a better than 12k pay raise annually as well.
I let a 1934 Fiji sixpence and a 1937 George VI Coronation Small bronze medal go to a new home in Canada.
I've sold a number this year to finance new purchases. These are the ones that I will miss the most. 1) I had wanted one of these for a while and then once I had it realized I didn't need it. If I had waited a few months, it would have sold for a lot more. 2) This one didn't fit the collection, but I liked it anyway. 3) Japanese Lead Mon. It was an impressive piece in hand but didn't fit my collecting goals.
I haven't sold any coins for many years. I gave some or traded some to friends here on CT. I made up sets for grandkids and great grandkids. We are expecting 2 more next year. So, that will be an outlet for a few more.
I have not sold any coins this year. It has been 1 of the hardest years for me. I have not bought hardly any coins this year because of my debt problems. Hopefully 2022 will be the year I get my debt problem paid back and things will get back to normal. I will look forward to buying coins again and going to coin shows in Vegas. My coin buying will be very focused in 2022.
I tend to have a few reasons for selling. Sometimes I realize a purchase was a mistake or I just don’t like the coin so it’s best to move on rather than keeping it (none of the coins in this thread were sold for this reason). Sometimes I upgrade or find a coin I like better and want to limit the “duplicates” (that was the case with the Kyrgyzstan coin). And the most common reason for selling is a combination of using the funds for something new and trying to stick to the box of 20 concept (which isn’t quite 20 in my case but I try to keep it at a reasonable number for me where it’s only a certain amount over the current top 20).
@Vertigo I like your reasoning to sell as well. Some of my box of 20+ items only leave the box because another person wanted it a lot more than me (and thus allowed me to reinvest those funds into something even better). And a big congrats on the new job! @Chris B those are some cool items you sold! You had solid reasoning for them and I’m sure the keepers more than make up for the items sold. @spirityoda I liked that Pan Pac too and it’s one of the better classic Commemorative designs in my opinion. I paid a big premium for the color. At the time of the sale, I had new coin opportunities and a buyer willing to pay even more than I did, so it made sense to let it go. Also, I’m certain you’ll be back on your feet in 2022, ready to add more awesome coins to your collection!
Sold some W quarters and common silver.Really no loss either way since I did get them for face value.
A few more comments: I respect the views of those that haven’t sold a coin and understand the strong attachment to certain coins. It’s not something you have to try but I do think attempting to sell some coins can be a good experience. It allows you to reflect on your collection, see which items really speak to you (vs which ones you wouldn’t miss), and have a sense of how well you did on the buy side (depending on how much you can get when selling). Also a big thumbs up to those who have gifted coins this year, including to future coin collectors!
In today's pandemic, I keep all of my children . . . er, coins, at home and don't let them out of my sight. Seriously, I've never sold or traded any of my coins. Given several away, but never . . . well, wait a minute, I did give another member here a Buffalo nickel and he sent me some money (not asked for, but appreciated) so I guess that might count as selling one?
