I have a Silicon Valley background, meaning I've started some companies, two were sold, one failed. Gained experience raising money, became a private equity guy. Now I've stopped chasing deals. In November 2018 my Dad died (long time Navy officer from Viet Nam through the Gulf War, retired and eventually started his own maritime company in 1998) but before he died I helped him sell his company in May of 2018 to a private equity firm. I spend a lot of time on astronomy when I am not playing with my coins. I've been collecting since age 11 and have always had a strong interest in history and the classics, though I sold my initial collection at 18 to fund part of my college expenses. I got started again in 2014 with unclean coins, which was exhilarating and frustrating at the same time, then I started buying individual coins. It's interesting to see the diverse backgrounds of folks here on CoinTalk. I've learned a lot and try to impart some of what I have learned to the new folks.

    • I am 54 as of this post; 55 this year (b. Dec. 1965).
    • I am a low-ranking hotel clerk (night auditor) by trade, and have worked in various upscale resorts since 1987. I do not earn a particularly large salary, but the international atmosphere of a high-end resort can be appealing, and I've met some interesting people.
    • Though I've always been relatively well-read for my years, I was never a particularly good student, and did not take well to schooling. I floundered around in college, never completing a degree despite three abortive attempts.
    • I have been married twice (in 1991 and 1999) and so have been with my present wife 20+ years now.
    • We have a daughter (b. 2001) who is graduating high school and about to attend college. I also have an estranged son (b. 1991) from my first marriage.
    • I began collecting coins in November of 1976. I've told that story several times, including here.
    • I have been a collector of World coins since the early 1990s, and Ancients since 2007, though my interest in both those categories began much earlier.
    • I have an active curiosity and consider myself a "world citizen", so I'm not quite so insular as many American collectors.
    • My tastes are quite eclectic, as you can see from my collection, [*slow-loading page] which has ebbed and flowed over the decades. It has been almost completely purged a few times, and continues to change and evolve. The one constant is that I have always enjoyed it.
    • I am often childlike in my enthusiasm. This can sometimes show in my web posting. Though deeply serious at my core, I have a silly or even absurd side which often surfaces (with mixed results).
    • I was also an avid treasure hunter (relic hunter, coinshooter, metal detectorist, fossil hunter) for many years.
    • I have run out of ideas in describing myself. I will say that numismatics is one of the few areas where I have gotten much respect over time (some of it deserved, the rest somewhat surprising).
    • In person, I am not particularly charismatic, nor impressive. I have become morbidly obese and diabetic and have an inferiority complex about my physical, financial, and intellectual status.
    • In other words, I'm not good-looking nor in the best of shape, not well-to-do, not in a high-powered career, and though above average in intelligence, not so well-educated in the formal sense. And I'm a little bit insecure about all those things. Yet paradoxically, in light of those shortcomings, I still constantly have to be on guard against my own ego and narcissistic tendencies. Go figure.
    • But in balance, I reckon I'm a pretty good person, and I do always strive to better myself.
Below: a 2004 photo in coin geek regalia. The background is the old slave hospital ruins at Retreat Plantation on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, which are now on property that is part of the Sea Island resort. I work at a sister property which is also on Saint Simons Island.

(Still a thirtysomething and not quite yet a Jabba the Hutt clone here)

Edit: a more recent (2019) photo, spoofing the old avatar pose above. The old Holey Coin Hat is still in my closet but denuded of coins (I sold all its gold during the recession). Maybe I'll get some more old holey coins (not necessarily gold) and reincarnate it one day.

Thank you for this thread, @Roerbakmix

This is me, Svein (47) from Norway. My nickname is Svessien.

This is the real treasure of my life. Her name is Frøy, after Frøya (norse god equivalent of Venus):

I have been collecting coins since 2003, but playing the guitar and bass since 1986. This is a video that was put together after a festival in Germany where we played in 2009, with our music as the sound track:

Like many Norwegians, I am fond of the outdoors. And like many men my age, I try to stay young and hang in there.

My work has always been with young people. Right now I am supervisor at an emergency institution for young people with challenges with drugs, crime, etc. It’s hard but also rewarding. The government pays me just enough to enable me to collect coins. Or eat. ;)

One of my personal hobbies besides coin collecting is amateur microbiology. I like making my own agar and growing different strains of bacteria from water/environmental sources. I also enjoy microscopy.

Here is a sample of a coagulate negative Staphylococcus I isolated from a tap water sample in Mississippi. Contrary what people think, many species of bacteria are extremely beneficial to us humans and can protect us from other harmful strains.

And here is a gram stain I did of the inside of my mouth. Notice the epithelial cell with the large amounts of bacteria( most likely a type of Streptococcus species)

    Robert,

You are totally underestimating yourself. You are one of the most entertaining and engaging people I've ever read online. I love it when you post something new. You have such an awesome sense of humor and such a great way of looking at things. You've really cheered me up when I was down before and I really thank you for that. I've tried to read everything I can find about your metal detecting coin collecting fossil hunting and just plain funny stories. you should consider writing a humorous book about your life, I'm sure it would be hilarious. If you wrote it in the style of your posts and just describe what happened to you I think people would find it extremely entertaining.

Keep up the great work and let us know if you need help with anything.

My story has been told here too many times and there is nothing worth telling anyway. My wife and I rarely have people over for dinner because what we eat is too strange for the local crowd. I have more pets than most people because of our colony of millions of bacteria and yeast that make kefir. They require daily attention but we can take a break and put them in the kennel or refrigerator if we will be away.

I was born in Manhattan a little more than 60 years ago, the child of a German-Jewish Holocaust survivor who finally was able to come to this country in 1943, and an American Jewish man she met in school here. I grew up in the City, went to college and law school, and had a marriage that I'll skip over except to say that it produced a wonderful son who turned 30 last month -- impossible to believe! I lived in New Jersey for more than 20 years, but moved back to NYC about 10 years ago. I practiced law here for more than 35 years at two different law firms and then a non-profit organization, but am semi-retired now.

My two primary pastimes are collecting coins and antiquities, and doing genealogical research about my own family, and for others -- I've been able to trace my mother's family back to the 1500s in Alsace and what's now Southwest Germany in some branches, which is very unusual for Jewish people to be able to do.

I've been extremely interested in both my family history, and in coins, since before I was 10 years old. The two hobbies have more in common in what they require than you might think -- including patience, a love of research, and an eye for detail, among other things.

Even though the very first coins I ever bought were a couple of very beaten-up LRBs that cost me about a quarter apiece at a little coin shop a few blocks from where I grew up, I actively collected first world coins, and then British coins and medals, for decades, until I had to sell most of the British materials about five years ago. When I resumed collecting three years ago, I decided that I was never going to be able to replicate what I'd sold, so I turned to ancient coins instead. I'm glad I did!

In the last three months, I've been busy practicing social distancing, leaving me a lot of time for this forum! Although now that the weather's nice, I do try to get out more, not one single person has been in my apartment since the beginning of March other than myself and my son. And my cat Ziggy. Although I'm expecting a plumber in about 10 minutes! That'll feel strange.

I am one of the more un-photogenic people on the planet, so I rarely take selfies or allow my picture to be taken, but here's a pre-lockdown photo of me and Ziggy. (Ziggy is a big boy.) It's not great, but it's the only recent photo I have. Since then, I've been eating way too much.

[Note: I never intended to leave the photo up permanently, and am taking it down now.]

@svessien- brilliant! I love the crossroads where Classical and Rock overlap. Speaking of rock(s), I love that climbing photo. I'd never do that myself, but it looks like a beautiful place.
@DonnaML - you look quite distinguished, and Ziggy looks like a good companion.

I was born in central Ohio where my father was an auto worker and my mother was a librarian. I'll turn 30 in July and I've collected coins since I was about 8 years old. I grew up looking for artifacts (arrowheads/stone tools) in the fields in our area with my dad, and spent countless hours rolling my ankles in the ploughed fields while also finding some cool items. I was drawn to coins when I found several in the fields and took an interest in them. I started out in U.S. coins and would randomly buy other coins I found interesting, which took me into world coins and then into Ancients, which is what I've been obsessed with lately, and forsee that going forward.

I attained a degree in financial services and afterwards served in the Army as an active duty infantry officer for 3 years. I then put my degree to good use and became a financial advisor. I married my wife in 2013 and we have a baby boy due in August (our first). We also have a basset hound named Slinky. I have several other hobbies including fine woodworking and helping my wife garden and work outside on projects. The photo is on the bridge across the creek on our property.

I love that creek and old bridge! Reminds me of some that were on my grandfather's old property. If there is a good swimming hole in your creek, shaded by lots of trees, that would probably be closer to my idea of paradise than the typical tropical island most folks imagine.

(Not that there's anything wrong with tropical islands. My idea of paradise just happens to be a cooler, more woodsy sort of place; often misty or foggy. With streams and lakes.)

I turned 27 this past March and I have been collecting coins since April. I have about 40 coins that I bought already identified, and I have 34 uncleaned coins that I am currently working on (steady but slow progress is being made). I spent 6 years as a Paralegal in the Army Reserves. I graduated college with 3 majors (honors history, political science & interdisciplinary honors) and a minor in sociology after 3 years of study (while in the military). I got an award for excellence in the study of history upon graduating (my thesis was based on the real causes of the War of 1812, it wasnt impressed sailors like many think).

After I school I worked as a Senior Legal Specialist in finance for about a year and then worked for 8 months as a project manager with a legal based non profit organization. I recently became a teacher in NYC public schools (Brooklyn born & raised but now living in Astoria, Queens) and although I am a generalist, I specialize in history. My job might be in jeopardy because of budget issues after covid, so I might find myself back in a boring office setting in the near future.

In my spare time I like to play with my 14 year old Yorkie (Sparky), go running or play sports (baseball, football, basketball, tennis, & handball if anyone knows what that is). My gf and I also love nature and often go to Central Park since we live so close. We like to watch a lot of movies (new ones & classics we havent seen yet) and play board games. We also enjoy our fair share of Whiskey, Tequila & Wine.

I wanted to share some of my historical based decorations with you. In my living room I have a pyramid made of mixtiles to the left of my tv & a chronological rectangle of American History images to the right.

    Pyramid.png American History Mixtiles.png

Then on another wall I have paintings of two NYC landmarks and a timeline of the city above (starting with George Washington entering the city in 1783).

    Timeline.jpg

My fridge is full of quotes from my favorite figures (the Hamilton quote was never actually attributed to him and it annoys me, but I am fond of the man and the quote so i went with it anyway).

    History Magnets.png

My desk has a Julius Caesar pencil holder & Frederik de Wit mouse pad. Then I have my Anubis wine glass. I swore when I bought it that I would only drink wine like a pharoah from that point on, and I think I have used it twice in the last 6 months.

I also have a picture of the empire state building halfway finished and a copy of Guernica in my kitchen, but i think I have already shared way too much. Sorry for the extremely long post, i get excited sharing these and enjoy reading about all of the other CT members.
