Well.. here we go! My favorite coin I own, the 1 Billion Mark from Westphalia. This huge coin, it shows the year of minting 1923, but in fact it was minted in 1924, when the hyperinflation had already ended.

Interesting, I'm surprised they used English "billion" instead of German "Millarden" for it.

I'm with you there. I have no single favorite.

I do, however, have a "top three" from my "Eclectic Box" collection:

Ancient Greece (Kingdom of Macedon): silver "Mercenaries" drachm of King Perseus, ca. 175-170 BC
    [IMG]
(NGC Ch MS; Strike 5/5, Surface 5/5)

England (Anglo-Saxon): silver penny of Aethelred II, struck ca. 997-1003 AD
    [IMG]
(PCGS MS63; pop 2/1; tied with one other for second-finest graded by PCGS)

Great Britain: gilt copper proof halfpenny of George III, Soho Mint, 1806
    [IMG]
(PCGS PR65 DCAM, ex-NGC PR64 CAM; the second-finest graded example at PCGS as of mid-2017)

Steve, we can do that if you want, but I think it's easier to just draw four random numbers (one for each prize coin), and whoever's number comes up in each drawing, well, that's the coin they'll get.

That would indeed be cool. I've had a late 16th century ducat (1597, as I recall), but I wonder when the first dated ones were struck? I'll bet @GDJMSP could tell us a thing or two about that.

I've got Netherlands, and gold, and 15th century covered, but it's a florin, not a ducat. One day I'd like to have a dated goldgulden/florin, with nice toning. This one will do in the meantime. It's about to be cracked out and sent off to NGC very soon.

Netherlands (Gelderland): "St. John" type goldgulden (florin) of Arnold van Egmond, ca. 1423-1472
    [IMG]
(PCGS Genuine; XF details, "Filed Rims"; soon to be attempted at NGC for a straight grade)

Those are great little coins. I used to have one on my trademark "Holey Gold Hat". :)

Well, it would take a book to do it properly, luckily there is one. Imagine that ! :)

But, short and sweet - the first Netherlands gold ducat of the design that most are familiar with - knight holding arrows on the obv - was struck in 1586.

    1586 ducat obv.jpg

But prior to that there were plenty of provincial gold ducats struck before the Netherlands even became the Netherlands in 1579. These coins, however, some might not consider them to be "Netherlands ducats" since there was no such country at the time. But yeah they were definitely struck at mints that became part of the Netherlands. Earliest dated one I can think of off the top of my head was struck at the Haarlem mint in 1572. But you're not gonna find one of those because there's only 1 known to exist.

Either way, make no difference to me, but I have always enjoyed getting to pick my prize.
I tell you what... I will put up a 5th prize coin, and all 4 winners will have a choice of prize.

    Sorry for the bad pics...

OK, we can do the drawings just like I did my July giveaway.

    Five random numbers.

First person drawn chooses their prize first, second drawn chooses next, third person gets third choice, fourth person fourth choice, and the fifth winner drawn gets whatever's left.

Not sure if Rob means favorite coin in general or favorite coin owned (perhaps it doesn't matter!) but I'll assume the latter.

Here's the favorite in my collection, Ceylon 5 rupees, 1957. Not particularly rare or valuable, but the parade of animals on this one never ceases to fascinate me. (Apologies for the poor pic.)

As a group, the Cuban 5-pointed star coins are one of the better series of the 20th century in my humble opinion.

    I have a 1915 peso and a 1946 1 centavo; looking to add more.

I almost bought a proof of one of those, but just missed the boat on it, as I recall. That's one modern coin I certainly wouldn't mind having in the Eclectic Box!

As to posting one's favorite coin in general versus favorite coin owned, it doesn't matter - that's up to y'all. Whatever you want to do. We're being laid back and easy with this giveaway. Keepin' it simple this time around. Having everyone post their favorite coin(s) just makes the thread more interesting than simply saying, "enter me in the drawing", right?
