I know; it has been a moment since my last post. Alas, I am still living and collecting...moving on to Washington Quarters and Morgans. As of late, I have been assisting in writing articles for my coin club and am beginning to run out of ideas. I was wondering, do you guys have any ideas? If you belong to a club, what sort of articles do you enjoy reading? I have done series spotlights, focused on pattern pieces, engraver history and background, and even interviewed a dealer or two. So, what else would be good for a coin club article? Thanks for taking time to respond.
Exposure, advertising. Very seldom, if ever, do local dealers advertise with maybe the exception of a lowly phone book, which are becoming scarce.
A few ideas near and dear to my heart, although I am not sure if they are already well worn: (1) Coin Price Guides are falling behind on surging coin prices. Rethinking the necessity and relevance of tradition price guides. (see threads here on CoinTalk, might be the nugget you need to inspire a full blown article.) (2) Collectible Coin Slabs. (see threads here on CT) (3) Coin Photography Basics (see threads here on CT) (4) "So-Called Dollars" Understanding what they are, how to collect them (5) Looking beyond the 7070 Type set, what coin types are missing and making a expanded US Type set definition that makes up for the deficiencies/omissions/errors of the 7070 but keep the philosophy and approach at heart, (coins that can be realistically collected by an average collector without deep pockets) (6) Numismatic Acronyms, what they mean. (lots of niche ones some people might not know) Just as a starting point, see here on CT: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/cointalks-numismatic-acronym-glossary.257793/ I'll add more if I think of them.
You could also write about early dealers and collectors. There's a ton of stories--good, bad and "you just can't make this stuff up." My favorite being the fist fight between dealers Lyman Low and Ed Frossad over a Strawberry Cent.
