I love collecting toned gold, and have been wanting an ancient gold for awhile now, so when I saw this coin posted by @iamtiberius I had to ask him about it. Thankfully he was willing to sell it to me, and I love it! Here is his thread about it: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/valentinian-i-solidus.265996/
Who wouldn't love gold? This is a very nice coin. I remember it when it was posted before. Congrats. My only gold: VALENS AV Solidus OBVERSE: DN VALENS PER F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: RESTITVTOR REIPUBLICAE, Valens standing right, holding labarum in right hand & Victory on globe in left, cross to left. Mintmark star ANTE star Struck at Antioch, 364 AD 3.6g, 19mm Antioch RIC 2d,xxxvii-5
Pretty fricken slick, jwitten => congrats (love the cool toning) ... it looks hot!! (even through the plastic case ... that never gets old, eh?) Oh, am I allowed to toss-in my humble Valentinian-I example? => this was my very first ancient coin-purchase (the game-breaker!!) Valentinian I, AE 19 mm Minted AD 367--375 Obverse: D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right Reverse: GLORIA ROMANORVM, emperor walking right, head left, dragging captive and holding labarum, TES B in exergue Weight: 2.7 g Diameter: 19 mm Reference: RIC IX Thessalonica 16a
At the moment, (things may change), gold does not do it for me. I don't lust after it. Except with one exception. You all know which one, and you all know who has it.
VERY Nice!!! Great Provenance! Great capture! Most all my Gold is Modern... however, I do have a couple ancients: Carthage - Zeugitana AV 1/10th Stater-Shekel 350-320 BCE 0.94g 7.5mm Palm- Horse Head PERSIA Achaemenid Darios I - Xerxes II 485-420 BC AV Daric 14mm 8.3g Lydo-Milesian std Sardes king wearing kidaris and kandys quiver running spear bow - Incuse Carradice Type IIIb Group A-B pl XIII 27
@jwitten A superb coin, congrats. @Bing I have always loved that Valens. I only have 2 gold coins. The first is Justinian and the second is a scarce coin of Theophilus. I love them both. I do have my eye on another gold coin at the moment and will post it if I get it.
@jwitten , sweet ancient gold! Before long I predict you'll be selling some $2 1/2 Indians- can't you just imagine how impressive a roll of ancient gold would be? Here is my only gold ancient: and how about an Indian for you too:
