If you win, we ask that you please post to this thread later, after receiving the prize, to thank your donor, and also so that we'll all know you got it. If I should happen to be absent, you may assume the contest to be open for entries up until the time I return and announce the drawing. The prize: @Dafydd, our kind donor from Wales, has quite a fascinating lot for you here. It comes with a 56-year-old auction pedigree and an even earlier 318-year-old shipwreck pedigree! It is a silver "cob" type Spanish 8-reales piece ("piece of eight") from the wreck of the HMS Association, which sank off the coast of England in the Scilly Naval Disaster of 1707. @Dafydd says: "This is a shipwreck coin recovered from the HMS Association. It was originally from the Sotheby Auction. I'm donating it because I was keen to procure an Association coin and had a number of "spread bids" on Association coins and as luck would have it, ended up with three so happy to let this go. It's a big lump of a coin. Not in the greatest condition but a true shipwreck find. I have developed a side collection of these coins. I still scuba dive myself but these days in warm waters. The sea around me can have 40 foot tides and rip currents and is COLD. You can't dive without a dry suit and at 68 years old the hassle of dry suits, dive planning and weather, holds less interest. I've salvaged a lot of stuff myself over the years but mainly munitions and no coins." Thank you, @Dafydd! I just read some of that article about the disaster that sent that ship (and the coin) to the sea bottom. Pretty dramatic stuff.
Being a donor I feel rather guilty about entering. But I do happen to be a closet pirate (aarrggghhhh)…. I am throwing my hat in the ring for this awesome piece of treasure.
Being a frequent donor gives you all the more right to enter as a contestant now and then. What comes around goes around! I think it’s a very cool lot. Definitely not something you’re liable to see in a giveaway, usually!
I still don't own any cob coins, and this one is a pedigreed shipwreck coin too? Count me in! Obligatory coin-related content: There's a Phoenician galley on the reverse of this silver stater from the ancient city of Arados, struck by King Gerashtart (c.350-332 BCE):
Shiver me timbers! A shipwreck coin!? Please count me in for this drawing! I haven't been able to add a shipwreck coin to my collection yet, so I'll do my best to let my inner Polish pirate out. Arrrrr'd really treasure this treasure until me leg needs a peg and me beard turns gray. (My beard is already turning gray, but not entirely gray yet!)
That's a very cool coin, with a very cool provenance. Argh, I'll put in my entry post with @Randy Abercrombie as the recipient of this bounty, should this post be fortunate enough to be selected, matey. A hearty thank you to @Dafydd for his contribution to this CTF giveaway. As always, thank you @lordmarcovan for coordinating these thoughtful contests. Good luck everyone!
Thank you for the contest @Dafydd and Lord Marcovan. I would like that. Very neat. Here is a smile for you:
Thank you @Dafydd and @lordmarcovan Very cool prize this time. Count me in. I want that. I don't have any official "shipwreck" coins but I do have some that have the "sea salvage" look. This one possibly? It came out of a Heritage shipwreck auction without being attributed to one.
I don't have any shipwreck anything. So this would be neat to have. It is hard to collect one of everything!
I do not have a ship wreck coin and would like to enter. Here is a nice sun set from Destin FL. REGARDS.
What goes around does come around, as manifested in my winning a bonk after being a donor for CTF1. And since @Randy Abercrombie gave me that 4R, I'd like him to have this entry. Thanks @Dafydd for playing donor, you must have had some neat experiences in the waters.
I would like to enter for this coin. That is a really fascinating piece. I used to have an 8 Reales shipwreck coin but unfortunately traded it with some other coins for a fake gold necklace. I learned a very expensive lesson. On the bright side, Spring Break starts next week! I hope to get out and do some metal detecting.
