I came across this 1987 penny with what looks like a "D" next to the date. I know that mint marks are usually below the date. Is this an error of some kind? I am only a novice coin collector and know nothing about this coin and could find nothing on the internet concerning a mint mark error on the 1987 penny. When you look at it straight on, it just kind of looks like a dot but when you look at it from an angle it looks like it should be a "D". Could this be worth anything?

Without a picture it is just a guess. Most likely scenarios are a zinc blister that looks something like an 8 or someone stamped it with a number "8" stamp. Both would be considered damage and the coin would be worth only face value.
Please create your threads over at the Error Coins forum.. not the What's it worth forum. First find out what you have. Worry about value last. Most minor errors or varieties have very little or no premium at all! Especially damaged coins.. and we see many of those every day!
