Here is a previous thread (2016)on Design creep for anyone who wants to read it. Is this a noteworthy Error 'Discovery'? Will it go anywhere? | Coin Talk And here is a coin world article written by @mikediamond http://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2015/04/collectors-clearinghouse-design-creep.html
I would not bet on it being the only time it has ever happened. There were war years and coinage need years where the mint was very over extended. Just no one cared that much then. Since Mike Diamond seemed to use the absence of a rim gap (distance from the edge of die design to the rim ) and I hope I am not misunderstanding his comments, there are most likely many others of different years , and if it is considered a valued coin oddity, now every FB, or get rich from damaged change people will be here wanting to know how many microns of gap is allowed and still be a creeper for bucks. IMO, Jim
Design Creep Part IV. Die Errors: Die Deterioration/Deformation Errors: Design Creep Definition: In this rare die deformation error, the die face expands during the press run. In lateral view, it comes to resemble the battered handle of a rock chisel. Eventually the die face expands beyond the working face of the collar (presuming the hammer die is involved). The result is that the face of the coin struck by the deformed die lacks the design rim and the peripheral design elements are cut off. Among domestic coins, design creep has only been seen in a single run of 2014-P nickels, all of which were discovered by Robert Scheschuk.
It wou ld be neet to have one in my collection. And I would say it's worth a small premium. Just not $225. Maybe 10-20 bucks
1968 cents were the last year of using the same Master Hubs from 1916 That is why you'll see the outer verbage creeping out towards the edge over the years and other parts becoming mushy. read the first paragraph here ==> San Francisco Mint Cents of 1968-74, Part Two | NGC (ngccoin.com) referenced here ==> 1968s | Coin Talk
Gotcha. I am going thru a bag of 63's right now that are the same way. Any slight bag mak near a IGWT device. usually damages the letter also.
