I do not collect ancients coins yet, but I would like to comment about this thread. First off I really like this website. The things people have shared and the show and tell. I have learned so much about world coins and ancient coins. I do like the "likes button". It gives the OP a clue that other people are interested in what they have to show and tell about their coins or opinions. I am a very open minded person that accepts other peoples opinions other than my own. People are very generous in giving coins here as gifts. This started a very happy place for me to where I would send certain members here free coins to. I have learned what this means "it is in giving that we receive" here on CT.

I can remember a very heated discussion a couple of weeks ago to where thee other person was so into not accepting anyone else's opinion other than their own. It really annoyed me to the point of using the ignore button on him. His name will not be mentioned here. Never would have I ever thought of using the ignore button. I have used it 2 times on people that I no longer wish to chat with or listen to what they have to say. These 2 people were so focused on being on their own soap boxes and that was a real turn off moment for me. I really enjoy talking about coins and accepting other peoples experienced opinions on them.

After getting my debt problem paid way down this coming February I will be buying coins again. I have noticed a huge recent trend here on CT with more people posting about ancient coins than world coins. Someday I will buy ancient coins in the near future. I do want to thank everyone that has contributed about their world coins and ancient coins. I can loose myself in coins and that my friends is a happy/fun place for me. Peace.

The CT ancients forum is a community. It's like a pub, where people come on their spare time to hang out and de-stress from the events of the day.

And like a neighborhood hang-out, the subjects range from the hilarious to the heavy.

We joke about aliens. We parody pop culture.

We talk about the songs that catch our ears and the coins that caught our eye. We share the joy we get in collecting, such as when we get a good deal. Perhaps that makes us a non-serious forum.

We talk about serious things, too, such as history, iconography, or our numismatic scholarship. In this sense we're a serious forum.

But most of all, we're a community. We gift coins to each other, not just at Saturnalia, but throughout the year. And we support each other. We celebrate births. We mourn when one of us loses a father or loses a mother. We wish each other well in times of illness.

    It gets heavy sometimes.

But that's what communities do. That's what makes this forum a place we return to again and again.

I love you all. I do!

Since I lurk most of the time I don't care much about likes. I've been a member of CoinTalk since 2012 — ten years — and the number of likes I've earned is orders of magnitude fewer than people who have been on here for a third of that time.

CoinTalk is primarily a collector's forum, not a scholar's forum. However, I've gained quite a bit of useful knowledge from the contributors here. But you can be a "serious" collector with a "serious" collection, and still have fun with it. So what? And who cares what this person's "view" is? I don't.

You beat me to it, but that's exactly what I was going to say. This isn't the "Numismatics For Academics" discussion board. Good lord, this is the internet - if it's serious academic numismatic information you want, it's out there, and in volumes you'll never get through. There's nothing wrong with focusing on that, and there's nothing wrong with having a community that mixes that with a relaxing atmosphere, too. The good news: you can have it any way you choose to, staying in the "strictly academic" world or pulling up a chair in a more relaxed (but every bit as knowledgable) place like Coin Talk.

This complaint is like going to Baskin Robbins, liking only chocolate or vanilla ice cream, and complaining because they have all the other flavors, too. Pick your flavor and be happy it's there for you.

Exactly. You put in words how all members feel about this place ! I didn’t know you were heck of a poet RC…

For the record I only posted in the Ancients forum twice, so it wasn't me;)

All joking aside I have only been a CT member for 10 short months and personally I wouldn't change a thing. From my perspective Coin Talk is a diverse, mixed bag of coin nuts sharing what makes them happy. The only thing I enjoy more than the diversity of coins and information here Is the diversity of it's members.

PS: What's the point in showing off your collection, if nobody can "like" it ? :)

I’ll admit that I have been annoyed by the increasing use of gifs for a cheap laugh and like here (not the well-executed ones made specifically for a post like the Coinboy cover above - just the generic ones found on the internet), but at the end of the day, I don’t have to read those threads. I prefer to share my collection through some well-thought out research, but I don’t always have the time to do that. So the ‘show-off’ posts have their place.

I like CT, the friendly atmosphere, and as said above, the ‘community.’ I have never been part of another online forum where I did not know the people in person, yet still felt like they were my friends. So thanks all.

Thanks, RC. I think that says it all, perfectly. IMHO, your post deserves its own thread, a pin, and a Feature!

This thread, however, could do with a few more coin pics, so here's one in the hopes that Concordia will reign, and that any further negativity can be consigned to the Cloaca Maxima. :D

I do find it amusing that in defense of CoinTalk being described as a place that’s built on likes or whatever some person said, we have a bunch of feel good responses that inevitably have become a “likefest.” Hahahahahaha

Concerning the post on some other forum. Who cares? I’m not on that forum and I enjoy being on this one. That’s enough for me.

P.S. - Do not “like” this post. Hahahahaha

OK MY input.. I have learned MORE in the few short years on here than I EVER learned collecting the coins and tokens over a total of 50+ years, and it didn't cost me a dime (other than my own mistakes) Most folks on here are fine people with a fine (sometimes odd) sense of humor. As it was said a few times above, if you don't like it here, leave. Most won't miss you anyway if that's your attitude. You have some VERY smart and coin educated people here giving free advice. Take it or leave it, it's your choice. I personally like it here a lot and thank every Member that adds to the joy of coin collecting.

I've been a member here and there for almost 20 years now (I can't believe that...), and am even a moderator there for the french sub-forvm. @Roman Collector summarized it perfectly, and I've written that in the past : Forvm is more like a library while CT is more like a pub. I wouldn't put one over the other, we need both. I tend to visit more the pub than the library lately because life has been so hectic the past two years, and when I have some spare time I tend to prefer a relaxed conversation with friends in a pub than being alone and silent at the library...

But over all, we can be serious in all seriousness without for all that taking it too seriously, or what ?

Every time I decide CT is more trouble than it is worth, some posts like the ones from RC and Q remind me that we can enjoy the 'pub' without being bothered by some of the drunks that start fights. It is easy to be mad at the current situation that has ended the hobby as I once practiced it.

I hope this was not intended to be as offensive as I took it. If the rules allowed, I would change my name on this group - probably to something short even though some of the best letters (Q, Z, TIF, RC etc.) have been used.
