American Silver Eagle Security Features (In the Future)

Well, it's about time. According the director of the U.S. Mint, the American Silver Eagle will soon have security features in three stages.

These security features will be:
1) visible to the average person with an untrained eye
2) visible to numismatists, bullion buyers, and anyone who knows what they're looking for (under a loop?)
3) a third layer of security for Secret Service and Mint personnel to authenticate the ASE. This reminds me of the Royal Canadian Mint's DNA system which I explained in the past: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/royal-canadian-mint-bullion-dna-system.316724/

Secondly, it sounds like this will result in an overall redesign for the coin.

Personally, I am very excited about this. I have been a Silver and Gold Maple Leaf buyer due to their anticounterfeit measures, even though I am an American. If the Eagle is redesigned to feature several anticounterfeiting measures, I might just become an American silver convert!

All I can say is, it's about time.

 

I'm shocked so few people have posted in this thread and that to date only 3 people have liked it. This is the most important thing to happen to your American bullion since the American silver Eagle was first produced.

It's stunning to me how many people stack silver out of distrust in global capitalism, distrust in their economy and their politics, yet they completely trust the authenticity of their bullion and their ability to resell it to anyone in a pinch.

If you are skeptical by nature, which bullion buyers certainly are, you should be the biggest fans of security features on bullion.

 

A great added feature for a coin most beloved and renown......

 

Maybe its just getting out Privy.....and as a bullion buyer stacker or whatever I am I really welcome security features.... so u may become a SILVER CONVERT...

 

One thing about old guys. Some of us loathe change. Folks don’t believe me when I tell them my I-phone is five years old. I don’t want to change and learn a blasted new phone..... I would bet a lot of older stackers started much as me. We embraced the walking Liberty design and somewhere along the way, a few ASE’s turned into rabid silver stacking.

It is quite sad to me anyway that we live in an age that does demand we protect our bullion. So from that perspective, yes it is a good and needed change. Just not jumping up and down looking forward to it.

 

Not only have I had my phone for almost 5 years, but it was used/refurbished when I bought it. I just don’t like spending money when I don’t need to....other than coins, lol, and to give the kiddos a special treat.

 

Just a guess, but I imagine the change will be very minimal. Just look at our money. It has hardly changed. There have been no changes in a very long time to the Dollar Bill, Two Dollar Bill, Dime, and Half; minor changes to the penny and nickel; and big change to the quarter.

So I suspect the change will minor, to the level of the change we saw to the $5 bill and higher, changes that enhanced security with minor other changes.

I'm hopeful that not all of the new features are revealed immediately. Slow reveal would be handy to shake put the first round or two of counterfeits.

 

This thread slipped through the cracks the first time, and a more recent thread seems to have drawn the discussion that otherwise would've landed here.

 

How widespread is the counterfeiting of ASE's and AE's ?

 

We see a constant stream of eBay listings for silver-plated iron ASEs, which would fail both magnet and weight/dimension tests. I think silver-plated copper ones (which would pass magnet tests, but be slightly underweight or over thickness) are probably fairly easy to come by, too.

 

Yes, thank you. I'm surprised this got such little attention when I posted it back in August. This is, in my opinion, the most important bullion-related announcement the Mint has ever made besides starting to make bullion in the first place.
