Yes, funny how US coins might be manufactured using different physics than the rest of the world.

 

The obverse issues are not due to die wear. IGWT is quite well-defined, but the letters are malformed and even of different heights. This would not happen with a worn die. Instead, you'd see letters smeared out toward the rim. Study a bunch of pictures of 1921-S Morgans, and you'll see this. The reason LIBERTY is mushy is due to the transfer die process. Even on a worn authentic die, they'd be much sharper than what you see on this coin. It could be that the CPG coin is a F-VF that disguised the malformed lettering with wear. The editor of the quarters section would know, as would some of the BCCS people.

 

I am also in the camp of those that believe the CPG and OP coin are different coins. But at this time my problem with the OP's coin goes deeper. The spread of the doubling exhibited by the OP's coin does not appear to be geometrically correct. If the OP coin is a product produced from a transfer die the source coin used to make the die more than likely exhibited this same questionable spread.

And why would some utilize a valuable CPG variety coin for the purpose of producing a transfer die.

edit to say: I'm not claiming that this should change anyone's opinion but I think I see polish lines on the OP coin and this is a really good explanation of the effect of die lapping.

 

FYI, I’m not sure that you are aware, but many of the modern struck fakes have heavy die polish lines.

Based on a fairly decent sample size:

This is a bit elementary but a good reminder coming from all of this may be not to forget that a coin has two sides.

 

The washer and magnet? No. They just happened to find their way into my bag o’ fakes

 

Actually, three and the third side can be very revealing.

 

Reviewed this with my friends at the Barber Coin Collectors' Society and it came back as definitely NG. Lettering is a total disaster...

Whatever comes from this, I must agree I am skeptical on the PCGS coin. This thread is one of the better posts, save for some bad trolling, which I’ve read so far this year. Thank you to all working on finding the truth behind this coin variety.

 

L&C should submit it to CAC. If it stickers, it should then consign it to Legend.

I wish I owned L&C. I would have A LOT of fun with this one, before obviously doing the right thing and sending it back to PCGS under the guarantee.
