Best Silver Coins to buy and why

With the price of silver doing nothing these days I’m trying to put a list together of silver coins from say 2018-2019 that will hold their value and have the best chance to appreciate regardless of silver spot.

What are your top ones to buy? I’m looking for low mintage as well as collectibility/popularity.

Looking for 1 oz. and/or 2 oz. BU coins, not proofs. Premiums around $3-5 max.

    Some ideas I have are...

    2019 1 oz. Koalas 300,000 mintage

2018 1 oz. Koalas (dog privy) 15,000 mintage

2019 1 oz. Kook (pig privy) 50,000 mintage

2019 Somalia Elephant (pig privy) 5,000 mintage

2018/2019 Next Generation Perth mint 2 oz. coins. 75,000 mintage each

Providents 1 oz. the “world of dragons” series. 26,500 mintage

Also for some reason the Queens Beast 2 oz. coins seem to go up even though they are more than likely minting millions of them. But I do love the designs and look.

Anyways, if anyone can add anything to the list or have any comments I’d appreciate it.

Nothing against that shiny new stuff, but I like bulk World silver lots of older coins, which can often be had at face [edit- I meant to say "melt"] and sometimes even slightly below.

Sure, it takes extra homework to look up all the different fineness standards and bullion weights, but once these are put in holders with the bullion weight (ASW) marked on them, it's a nice way to stockpile silver. And sometimes you get some numismatic value above and beyond the bullion content.

But I guess that's not for everyone. It just seems more interesting to me than modern bullion, is all.

Now, that being said, there are a lot of fun bullion issues out there. I'm just not sufficiently up to speed on them.

In a similar vein, regarding US stuff, I'd rather stockpile a bunch of circulated Walking Liberty halves and stick 'em in a Whitman folder, than play with the bigger Silver Eagles that recycled that design. Buying "junk" silver in bulk and then trying to fill at least the common dates in a folder or album is a fun way to put away some silver on the cheap.

A little closer to your question:

For the January giveaway these last two years, I've wanted to give away a coin with the new year's date on it. This year, these were the options I gave the winners:

Last year, it was an Armenian "Noah's Ark" 1-ounce (500-dram) coin.

Fun stuff, and impressive in hand.

So yeah, I guess there's something to be said for the big, shiny, new stuff, too.

I just still prefer the older bulk silver stuff, myself.

If I were simply looking for price appreciation based upon silver value, I would go for recognizable coins for lowest possible premium per ounce. Stay away from pretty rounds, or oddball coins no one has ever seen. What you are looking for is recognizable coins people can verify are real silver.

If you want to speculate on coins that is a different animal. Then you can talk about privy marks, etc. However, silver investing and coin speculating are very different things. Make sure you know which you are doing.

Silver in any form is good. I personally prefer US silver coins, MS-70 to junk grades are fine with me.

I like 90% silver like quarters, halves, and dimes. Easy to sell and get rid of if needed. Once you have a large amount it gets boring to stack so then thats where getting world silver is fun as there is a lot of variety

I stack 90% to the moon as well as a little of the generic. I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on some premium stuff that gors up because of its low mintage and doesn’t rely on the price of silver solely.
I’m not looking for price appreciation based on the price of silver but rather like you say, speculation. LOW mintage but WELL known and consistently goes up much higher than the price of silver.

I understand stacking cheap and bulk 90%..I have tons of that...I’m looking to diversify my stack and buy some of the best premium stuff that will go up and not rely just on spot price.

I understand but if I knew the answer to your question I'd be buying those coins myself. :)

I buy opportunistically myself. Could be pandas, maple leaves, ASE, etc but I just let dealers know if they have issues walk into the store I am a ready market at a cheap price to offload them. I have bought all of them around spot before.

Making friends with dealers and have cash at the ready when a deal pops up will get you lots of good buys. Always have $1k or more ready when they pop up. My latest was about 35 pandas and 20 or so random other 1 ounce silver pieces all at spot, (yes the pandas were older so were full ounces).

Haha!! Yeah me too. I mean I have an idea...

Just for an example, I can buy 90% today at my LCS FOR 10.5x.. a couple days ago it was 10.8x. And I can buy generic rounds for $1 over spot EVERY day no matter spot price. ASE’s are $2.50-3.00 over spot ($17.00/oz.) every day as well.

But the 2 oz. Queens beast issues like the Lion, Dragon and Unicorn that only came out 2-3 years ago are selling for $50-$60 each ($25-30 an oz.) and the Griffin is selling around $85-90.

Or how about the Perth mint 2016 Monkey Lunar 1 oz coin? Selling for $33.50 an oz. it’s only 3 years old.

There’s a lot of examples but I’m just wondering if anyone has some that I’m missing or has experienced easy sales with that fetch a nice premium over what you paid after a few years. My timeline is 3-5 years of sitting on the coins.

Have you tried selling them for that price though? Dealers always ask more for older issues to pay them for sitting on them. Have you tried to achieve NET TO YOU the same price? Ebay charges some pretty stiff fees, as does Paypal. Its one thing to see what dealers are charging for something, but the real question is what could YOU sell it for? The answer is usually QUITE different.

Why do you think I can buy these coins around melt? Because the dealers paid less than melt for them. This included pandas, "privy marks" etc that collectors believe "add value". For a lot of it, in the end, the dealer pays you back of melt or you have to go through the hassle of selling them and paying all of the selling fees yourself. This is especially true of only a 3-5 year hold time.

I have coins that I buy all of the time and I pay less than the person who bought them in the 70's or 80's for. I just bought a Koson gold stater for half of what the person paid for it 15 years ago. Buying coins at retail and expecting to make money holding them is a very DANGEROUS game IMHO. Buy coins because you love them. Invest money in investments, not coins is what I tell people.

    Good advice.

These would have to be sold on fleabay...or privately. Even after the huge fees you will still be up a good percentage over what you paid.

But you may be right, maybe there is no money to be made here...that’s why I was wondering if anyone had any success with this. I’m sick of buying silver and watching it drop with the spot price. Wanted something that holds its value better. Thanks for you opinions.

Lately,I have been purchasing maple leaf 1 oz. 5 dollar coins.
I order online. For a $100.00 order I can get 3 maple leaf coins and a silver nickel.
    $23-24 a silver 1oz. 5dollar coin
    $10.00 a silver nickel
    Bullion charge is $10.00
    These are Canadian prices.

    Personally, here is my rank:
1.) ASEs. Here in the USA, everybody wants them and you can always get premium.
2.) 90% Dollars, like old cull Morgans/Peace dollars.
    3.) 90% half dollars.

Everything else I get a good price I sell to buy more of the above.

Silver Kruggers are really a good value right now, some places i have seen for
    $2.00 to $2.50 over spot !

I just talked to my local LCS who buys everything you ask him to. The only thing he will pay over spot currently is some queens beast 2 oz coins and he said “maybe” to ASE’s and limited mintage Perth stuff. But that’s only if his inventory is low or out. Other than listing on eBay I can’t see buying Kruger’s or anything else with a huge premium except the Queen’s beasts. That’s fo R me personally when if I want to sell. Of course things may change but like he said all that Perth Mint, Maple leafs, Kruger’s, etc. is everywhere and easily bought for spot. Kinda a bummer really.

I will still buy some Perth and Royal Mint stuff though as I just really like it and it’s rhe collector in me wanting it. But until I plan on being a seller on eBay and pay them huge fees I’ll stick with what sells locally. 90%, U.S. gold and close to spot silver as I can get.

Premiums come and go on what is popular at the time, but when you buy
You will usually have to pay a premium of some type, as the merchant
Has to make something, economics 101.
