A few (IMO) of my most visually stunning, and unusual pieces. I am now a collector of unique coins/medals, and not trying to complete sets, which have the same design. I love the diversity of the designs in my collection, and my collection as a whole has re-sparked my interest in the hobby.
Wonderful coins, all! Here's one of my favorites, issued for the 1906 Milan Expo. It's got a low relief, so hard to find in this condition.
Here's a link to another thread with a similar theme. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/po...chnologically-advanced-etc-coins-here.301285/ Some may find these shocking to see...
Ancient Greece (Kingdom of Macedon): silver "Mercenaries" drachm of King Perseus, ca. 175-170 BC (NGC Ch MS; Strike 5/5, Surface 5/5) Great Britain: gilt copper proof halfpenny of George III, Soho Mint, 1806 (PCGS PR65 DCAM, ex-NGC PR64 CAM; population 1 with 1 higher as of 11/04/2017) Liberia: proof copper cent, 1847 (PCGS PR65 BN, ex-NGC PF64 BN; population 1- finest graded at either service as of 11/04/2017) France: copper specimen striking of a 10-centime pattern (essai), 1848 (PCGS SP65 RB; population 1- the only example certified by PCGS as of 11/04/2017)
Say, those are some nice hooters! I quite like that square Canadian barn owl, for some inexplicable reason. That's one modern I would willingly put in my collection. The Cameroon Athenian tribute is neat, too (what's the mounted stone?) Like 'em both.
Oh, speaking of hooters, I suppose this one qualifies as "uniquely beautiful", though it's not Mint State or a proof or specimen striking like the others I posted. It did get perfect "strike" and "surface" ratings from NGC. I love this coin. Ancient Greece (Spartans in Taras, Calabria, Italy): silver drachm, Athena and owl, ca. 302-281 BC (NGC XF; Strike 5/5, Surface 5/5)
Yes, I Googled the two types you posted and saw some other appealing recent issues, as well. Great stuff. I could've been tempted into an owl-themed collection...
I'm with you. So many nice ones, both new, and ancient, to have an excellent sub-collection. Very tempting.
Here is one of my nicer Renaissance AV coins/ had I been around in 1593/ I would have collected this one.... probably a weeks wages back then. Today, it took 2 weeks wages to win it from Polish Auction. AV Dukat 1593 Danzig Mint Sigismund III of Poland
