I just wanted to see if anyone is still hoarding copper out there. I know it is illegal to melt it, but some people think the penny will disappear like it did in Canada.
Absolutely pure copper is only worth like $2/lb. If I wanted to hoard a commodity, it wouldn't be copper.
This is my favorite ebay listing http://www.ebay.com/itm/Truckload-o...-Bulk-Bullion-Lot-FREE-SHIPPING-/361492376954
Unless you are into hoarding things for Grandkids you will never meet, there are better ways to invest!
Wow, I wonder if our coin club would want to do a group buy! We'd have hours of fun sorting! (Although I'm pretty sure they'd all be worn common dates!)
That's awesome! I do separate my copper cents into another "bucket" from the zinc. Zinc go to bank, the copper does accumulate, but nowhere near the hoard status of some nuts on CT apparently. Now I know where to turn if my wife starts complaining about having too many jars full. "But see, look! He's a bigger nutcase than me!"
My boss did, but we're in the electrical business so he bought $80,000 of copper just to have as a security if we needed it for one of our projects. That was when copper was up around $3.00.
There's a big difference between $80000 of copper and a truckload of cents that, if they could be melted down, might be worth $80000, though.
The only real reason to hoard copper cents would be to sell in lots in eBay to someone else. Other than that you really just end up with a bunch of cents taking up a ton of room
Well the guy is asking $89,600.00 453.592 g in an lb. OK he says there are 40,890 lbs. 40,890x 453.592/3.1= 59,830.25 almost 30 thousand dollars over face value. Well let's see copper is currently 2.51 a pound. (not troy I assume) Copper cents are 95% copper? 40,890x.95x2.51= 97,502 But the smelter has to make something.
YEAH I bought some Canadian Pennies early this year from a college kid needed a little money... never have look through just 100..00 worth....
Ok i got to say something first off yes there is no more cents being made in copper in Canada .....True Yes the mint is collecting all cents back to be melted down....True But here is the kicker YOU CAN NOT MELT THEM. never ever, for it is still currency and will always be one Cent, so i am not sure who ever thought a penny that mint said was costing them 2.7 cents to make one and there worth more because there Copper lied to you.You can't melt it if you do melt it and get caught you get a big fine and go to jail.a scrap yard can not buy it for copper. And this is my 2 cents
OK good to know...They can tell if you melted mixed us pennies and Canadians together in a brick or square of copper? jus asking? sounds like just wasted some cents then................again.............
Interesting dealer, we often have people ask about gold-colored quarters...check this one out: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Circulated-...278403?hash=item58eb911ec3:g:GxUAAOSwcUBYQaXX
