Do you mind explaining that? How would the hobby suffer?

Certainly the only solution is that all coins must be recalled and destroyed by the government. If this doesn't happen someone somewhere could get taken advantage of and everyone needs to be protected

Here's a question. Does he check for varieties, errors and VAMs before he defaces the "junk coins?" I doubt he even knows what to look for. What a big help to the pursuit of knowledge in the hobby that is.

I see many articles which ask how can we bring new collectors into the hobby, Carrs pieces may well do that. Many senior collectors frown upon modern doubled dies, modern series etc, Carrs work has its place in numismatics. More than once on the journey, I have been disappointed by the puritan image some others have of the hobby. Coin collecting should be for everyone of all ages, price points and tastes.

He has answered this question in this forum on another thread, yes he does check all the coins before overstriking.

Oh god. This couldn't be further from the truth. He's a big coin collector first. He's a huge VAMmer and only uses common dates (of any series) and typically tries to use dates with no big money VAMs for dollars. He pulls out all better dates he gets and checks the dates that are known for good vams for those vams before authorizing the coin for preparation to restrike. Same with any other series. He always checks for obvious varieties & errors. The assumpions you are making are the furthest from the truth they can be.

He's a big vam enthusiast. But please continue with your hatred

Well, while that may be reassuring to collectors of those, what about to collectors of lower grade coins? I don't even like it when we melt halves.

Ugh. It seems to me that "lack of technical precision in diction" in a legal decision is on par with "lack of precision in aim" when firing a weapon. I wish they wouldn't do that.

    Thanks for the additional explanation.

Sounds like a personal problem. Good thing you didn't live through the Pittman Act. And you must have been a very angry person in the early 80s if you were a collector back then. What he does is transform trash into treasure. He literally has "the Midas touch". A modern day alcamist if you will.

Well. Then I think your anger should be directed at the big commercial smelters who melt them down in mass quantities...not someone like DC who uses a very small number of coins in comparison.
