Hello everyone! Hope all is well with you all. It's finally Friday for those of you that work for a living. I'm calling this " Favorite Finds Friday". Just post a one or two of your favorite coin finds in the "wild", purchased or maybe like me, Metal detected. I found this about 12 years ago Metal detecting around an old cellar hole similar to this one that I ventured one particular year: (1892S Barber Quarter)
Just a few. All detecting finds except the Roman coin, which was an "eyeball" find. 15th century Chinese royal medallion of the Ming Dynasty Xuande emperor (found in 1994 in Swannanoa, North Carolina) 1658 Spanish 4-maravedis coin (found in 1998 on Saint Simons Island, Georgia) Circa 395 AD Roman AE2 bronze coin of the emperor Arcadius (found around 2010 or so in Liberty County, Georgia) Circa 1300-1310 silver Long Cross penny of the English King Edward I "Longshanks" (found in 2013 in Essex, United Kingdom)
Thanks! I found it only about 5 feet from the cellar hole. It along with a V nickel ( 1895) was about 7 inches down. The nickel was rusty and leaked some of the rust on the reverse of the coin as you can tell. I just about lost it when I realized what I had. It was a very enjoyable ride home as tired as I was...
I just remembered. Forgetful me. I actually found a rusty square item that I set on some rocks with other iron junk. The signal was scratchy. It bounced back and forth from Nickel to Silver quarter with a lousy signal thrown in. I just dug just in case. Dug some rusty stuff, the nickel and then the Quarter. I'm glad I kept going over the hole.
I actually got this Twenty Cent piece in change back in the 50's. I recently gave it to my son who was born in 1975.
This was found in a Ziploc bag with a bunch of Kennedy Half dollars. It was an IRS auction. I paid about what silver was bringing at the time, 4X face. I saw the coin in the bag and set in the rain waiting for the item to come up.
I have very few "finds" but I guess this is my favorite. Found in the pulper clean-out pit at a recycled newspaper paper mill.
A few years ago when I inherited my Father in Laws collection, I was talking to a neighbour and he said he had a bag of Lincoln memorial cents. There were 300 of them and He only wanted 5 Euros for them. I assumed they had been searched thoroughly. Imagine my surprise and elation when I discovered this. 1971 DDO - 001.
