Nice, That coin went for 106.95!!
And the auction was 8 years ago.
I will be packaging and sending to PCGS TODAY! ( I was holding off to see what else people would say.)
Thanks for all the info and help guys and gals, i'll be posting the results the second they come back in the mail!

Also wanted to add, and I wish I would have taken pictures. The rim....on both coins, were spotting black/dark grey, which is more proof to myself that this is zinc and not some science experiment.

I had to transfer the coins out of their holders into a 2x2 mylar flip case, while wearing gloves of course, and this is when I noticed the spotting around the rim/edge.

Just more food for the though, PCGS will be the final decider here.

As long as you had it out of the holder, did you weigh it ? The results from the science experiments would be a very thin layer of 100% zinc, the same as the zinc core of a copper clad zinc cent, so the oxidizing spots could be there in either case. Any coin in a cardboard type of holder tend to have more reaction on the edge than either face of the coin.

Best of Luck! all we see are the photos :)

I have to say that both look like genuine, unplated errors. I think can see cartwheel luster in the pictures, something that is completely lacking on chemically altered or plated coins. The first one is slightly questionable without better pictures, but I can see it in the second coin.

No I did not, sorry Jim. Once I took it out of the holder, the coin immediately went into another protector to be sent to PCGS.

Thanks Thad! Gives me some good hop to see a Lincoln Lover send some positive feedback. I sent the actual package out TODAY to PCGS, and it should take about 2-3 weeks to get back,
So as soon as it comes back, I will immediately post results from PCGS!

The reason I said it looks like it may have been altered is because I see issues that are common with plated cents. Lumps and bumps that appear on plated cents. I'll be interested in what PCGS says.

In theory yes the flow lines and resulting luster would probably be present in the zinc as well. But the chemical action that removes the copper would also etch the zinc as well resulting in the dull dark no luster appearance.

Those plating lumps and bumps were what I was looking for and I didn't see any.

It might be the pictures fooling me but I see plating issues. Across the steps and in the fields.

I recieved an email last night(o8/08/12) from PCGS letting me know they recieved the 2 coins and they are going in for inspection!

As I said earlier, I will immediately post results when they come back, but it may take 2-3 weeks.

It's been one week since they received the 2 possible zinc pennies. Says they still haven't shipped it back, which is good in my opinion. It says it should take 2-3 weeks, and I hope they take all the time necessary :D

Am looking forward to the answer too! Here's the one I have and it has a wonderful cartwheel still. I need to take new pic, had a red shirt on and it picked up the color in the pic.
