I've read about some 1944 Denver and San Francisco mint pennies that were on a zinc plated copper planchet. Found this last night and I only ask because it looks as if a layer as been worn off exposing a grey color underneath. Any thoughts? 1944 s u. s. cent. No.. That doesn't look like any kind of error.

I think you mean zinc coated steel Planchet.
That would be a transitional error. A few Planchets left over from 1943. Only if yours sticks to a magnet then you might have something. But I doubt it.

There is no telling what substances contacted this coin after 75 years of circulation.
