Looking at the total worth per sale, I doubt this would be their motivation. I guess they are hiding in case they get caught selling coins smuggled out of illegal excavations in their home country.
. My feeling as well. If I would have to guess I'd say they're amateurs who are trying to offload an unregistered hoard they've uncovered. Just look at how overrepresented Cilician coins are in their auctions (at least in tha ancient section, where I browse), it clearly suggests origin. Also note how clumsy -and often downright wrong- their attributions are. Even I, not an expert at all, can spot them. A lot has been said about their deplorable packaging as well. The spelling is clumsy. It all points to amateurs, not numismatists. Zeus is probably simply their vehicle of choice to bring the hoard to the marketplace. Is it illegal? Insert answer. Is it unethical? Probably. But please, be careful before you pass judgement. I shudder when I think of all the coins sold through V coins, MA shops and all the auction houses were we like to buy and whom we consider trustworthy. How much do we really know about these coins' ultimate provenance? With a few rare exceptions, the best we ( and the dealers and the auction houses) usually get is an 'old collectors' ticket', or 'from the ...(insert name) collection'. But do we really know where, when, how, by whom and under what conditions these coins originally were dug up? Who benefitted? Whether all laws were followed? Through whose hands they passed before they arrived in trusted sellers' hand? And do we know if all scientific, historic, numismatic and ethical standards were met when they were excavated? Do you really believe it? Then why don't we have provenance for all coins...? Regretfully, I believe that far fewer coins in our collections are 100% percent kosher than we would like to believe... FWIW I'm not writing this to cast aspersions on dealers or auction houses and most definitely not to give myself or others a bad feeling about the coins we have in our collections. A more positive view would be that if it weren't for collectors and museums much of the data, historical information and many treasures and mysteries of ancient coins and artefacts would never be uncovered or, if uncovered, would simply be discarded and thrown away. The same applies to fossils and many other wonderful things our planet has produced. I think I'd rather hold on to that thought. Might as well post a coin: the first one I ever bought. ;-). @DonnaML and others, please note how easily an action has been criminalized (the website must be stolen), when not knowing all the facts (the two companies work or worked together and the website was copied with permission). I, for my part, will not comment any other theories anymore and focus on the problems instead that are evident. From what I've read, those are a) communication and b) packaging. Zeus Numismatics is now aware of this thread and the problems and will try to improve those things. @Pavlos, new companies do not only need to identify themselves (we ask for a trade register excerpt) but also need to provide references (other dealers they have worked with) that we check. Although their address is just a mailbox, it is a valid address and, for what I know, that's not illegal.
Dear People, l am the owner of Zeus Numismatics, l read all the comments, l am reall Dear Pavlos, I am in numismatic field for 15 year, l had shop in Vcoins for 7 years, and l work with CNG, Heritage, Leu, Bomos etc... for a long time, and ofcourse When we settled our company l gave Biddr.ch couple of good references , so l am not a cheater, l will be here any problem my guests and solve them l promise,
Where do ancient coins come from? LRB's and other small bronzes etc are often metal detected individually around ancient sites, whilst silver/and gold are often found in pot hoards during construction work. If hoards end up in a museum that is often where they lie waiting for the next millennia or two as the personal property of the curators. That is the situation of the Poggio Pincenze IGCH 2056 hoard. I was notified this was at sometime lotted out access-wise to a scholar. How long does it take to photograph the coins? Many of the tetradrachms have been or can be readily identified, the hemi-obols have been waiting for decades and a couple of the Achean league experts have translated to the other side since then. I await the publication with baited breath or my terminal breath which might be the sooner. Without the dark side of coin collecting there would be little or no progress, but collectors can be equally to blame where rare important finds languish as trophies in private collections and the owners are not interested in any research at all. I wonder where all the very interesting New Styles I cannot buy dissapear to? I very rarely see them ever again, luckily I can download images easily, but why did they buy them? Ownership not scholarship should be their motto. Rant, rant.....
Somehow all this reminds me of the regular practice of a business person placing the face of Aunt Jemima, Mrs. Butterworth or Uncle Ben on their packages because few people would buy food packages labeled "Wall Street Conglomerate". English speaking collectors, right or wrong, are less likely to buy coins and trust someone whose name is strange to their ears but no one has a problem using the name of a Greek god (I assume without his permission). It is wrong that many English speaking people have an inherent distrust of people with whom they do not share a language and relative few of us are even bilingual. When there is a problem with a business transaction, we do hope it can be resolved in a language we understand. No one can tolerate hiding the truth with fake contact links. When we see even the slightest hint of deception, the tendency is to think the worst and take our business elsewhere. It takes years to build a good reputation and seconds to destroy one. The inappropriately named "Ignoramus Maximus" brings up two worthy questions but the one that matters here is not a matter of right or wrong but whether each of us feel comfortable sending money to any business or if we are more comfortable shopping elsewhere. In the US, we often hear, "Innocent until proven guilty" but in matters of money, right or wrong, most of us operate under "Suspect until proven Trustworthy." Come to think of it, the majority of us here on CT operate under pseudonyms. I left the last h off mine because my first email only allowed eight letters.
My only goal is to supply the best coins with the most reasonable prices, we have enough consigners and sources, please follow our auctions , we are sorry for the delays because of the Covid-19, l wish it will be over very soon for all of us, l will not argue or discuss with anyone out of our business, l will be answering any question related to our company and items for our guests, enjoy bidding for the new items without any worry , we will be after any item is sold in our site, Kindest Regards, Zeus Team
