Here's one we don't see too often, a Zeus-Ammon from Thymbra with very prominent horns. TROAS, Thymbra AE17. 5.0g, 16.9mm. TROAS, Thymbra, circa 4th century BC. SNG von Aulock 158; BMC Troas pg. 89, 4. O: Head of Zeus-Ammon left. R: ΘΥ, star of eight rays; HP monogram below.
Do you include Roman coins like this? 23 mm. Maximinus II (305-310-313) struck 310-311. RIC Antioch 154c. Lindgren Celator April 1995, pp.34-36, this type is interpreted. "presents Sol as a sponsor of Serapis."
Yes-- in addition to all of his syncretic variations, I'd eventually like to collect Imperial which have representations of Serapis.
yeah, i was also expecting to see an alexandrian coin. that's pretty cool. here's my fav i've post a bunch...but this new pic is pretty darn sweet.
Here is one from Roman Egypt: Commodus, year 23 = 182/3 25-24 mm. Giessen volume 3, 2225. Sear 5913. Emmett 2568.
That's the nicest Commodus/Zeus-Ammon I've seen! Heck, it's one of the nicest Commodus tets I've seen period. Wow! I have two of the type (year 27) and both are in the more common dreadful condition. I bought them during first few months of collecting, specifically looking for Zeus-Ammon examples: (edited: my second picture isn't showing up and I can't figure out why. Too tired to troubleshoot it. It's even worse than the one above so perhaps sparing you the images is a good thing )
TIF, since we're posing-down our Serapis ... => how 'bout this Pb Tessera? (Serapis & Gryphon) ... that's all I got (I felt left out)
I have been researching the OP Zeus Ammon coin and Metcalf's book on "The silver Coinage of Cappadocia" says it is not from Caesarea, contra Sydenham's older work. Metcalf does not attribute it, but his footnotes suggest others have given it to Cyrene (Kyrene, in Libya). Kyrene did have a horned deity type: AR22-21. Struck 308-277 BC. bare horned head of Karneios right silphium plant. KY - PA / IV crab Sear Greek, 6319v. Kyrene does have similar coins with a bearded head described as Zeus Ammon. I suppose the lack of a beard on this one makes it not Zeus Ammon. Anyway, the OP coin is probably not from Caesarea. I'll look for a recent positive attribution.
