    All the advice given here is invaluable. Plus you have the added advantage of Barry's free expert opinion regarding your intended purchases. Even to a relative novice like me they scream fake. I suggest, if you're like me and cannot identify a fake from a real ancient, buy fewer coins but buy ones that have been authenticated.

    I have purchased coins from reputable auction houses in the UK which turned out to be severely damaged or fake when NGC took a look. Luckily they took them back without any issues.

    Yes many of the guys here won't share my views about grading antique coins but if you like, you can always crack open their coffins. And a Ptolemy II Mnaieion (Octodrachm), for comparison, looks like this:
