Interesting focus @zadie. I have been only vaguely familiar with these important coins. Your post piqued my interest.

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm very happy to see that others find these coins as interesting as I do!!

There are a bunch of differing types in the promagesterial series. Mainly because:

    • A governor would usually command his province for at least 1 year (longer if he was prorogued by the senate, as was common in the late 50's).
    • There were five mints in Asia striking promagesterial cistophori at this time: Pergamum, Ephesos, Tralles, Laodicea and Apamea (Laodicea and Apamea were subsequently transferred to the province of Cilicia in 57 but kept striking promagesterial coins).
    • Each mint had a supervising magistrate that served a term of approximately 6 months each.
The abundance of different types has contributed to the relative rarity of pretty much every single issue in the series. Most of the coins I've shown in this thread are types that I know less than 10 other examples of.

Interesting! I'm not at all as familiar with these issues as I am with my focus area but definitely something I want to read up on.

    Great to hear!!
