I misplaced my Bicentennial graded Ike. PCGS PR 69 Cameo. I got it as part of a coin lot. There were 5 silver coins and and two graded pf 70 washington and adams dollar coins. I got a screaming deal for all 7 coins at 103.00 The graded Ike was included in that. I'm cryin'.

I was cleaning a 1963 cameo franklin proof over the kitchen sink. Not a superior coin, but still a strong example of the date. My 95 pound labrador ran into the room chasing the cat & bumped into the back of my legs. I lost hold of the coin & it dropped into the sink. I mumbled a few swear words & than picked the coin up. Right across the cameo franklin was a scratch right threw franklin's bust & head. I was a a little angry that evening after that incident. oh well. Kinda comical now, but not 2 years ago!

Never really damaged a coin myself, but worst purchase I have ever made was a 1927 P Peace $ which looked AU, until I took a photo and found it was severely cleaned with something along the lines of a blender. To the naked eye, I would never have guessed it was cleaned, although it has an unusual brightness. I was a novice then, but I still have it now. This is it:

Something that happened a long time ago... My dad is a 'that's cool' coin collector and he has gotten some silver while in the army, though he got it in his change. And in elementary school, I couldn't find the change jar, so I looked and looked and found a change jar, grabbed some coins and went to school and bought lunch. Turns out they were 1949-S Franklins and a WL half. :( When he and I went through his collection when I first started collecting, I managed to slip a few franklins into his collection before he noticed. Then I told him while he was looking through. He was kinda angry that I did such a stupid thing 8 years ago, but glad I made the effort to replace them. The spankings have been averted.

nothing ever happened to me, but here are some things that happened to some friends:

When he was six, one of my friends (who is currently on this forum) broke open a proof set.

Another one of my friends accidentally left some rare cents (flying eagles and Indian heads, I think) outside, and his sister picked them up and spent them at the supermarket.

While a young North Carolina teenager 50 years ago my uncle, who knew I loved coins, brought with him on Christmas from California a half filled cigar box mostly of "S" minted wheat pennies as a gift. As I recall most were pre-1920's. Included were many 1909's and so forth. A few years later I needed gas and took them to a hobby shop where I was paid .15 cents each for the coins. Filled my tank and had hamburger money to boot. I thought I was rich! To this day I can't believe I was so stupid (well maybe).

Here's one. It was spring(ish) cleaning time for me. I was in my room cleeaning up the tornado aftermath I had established.

To make a short story even shorter, I think I accidentally threw away an 1856 half dime. :(

I don't know if it qualifies as an accident or a mistake, but it's something I feel bad about to this day.

A long time ago in the mid '70's, when my brother and were in 3rd and 1st grade, we decided to grab some change from my dad's change bottle to buy ice cream from the ice cream truck. Little did we know this was his bottle of 90% silver coins and wheat pennies...

At the local shop they always encourage me to look at the special box in the back. This box has contains coins like 1856 flying eagles, proof Gobrecht dollars, early bust dollars, etc. Coins that run anywhere from 2k to 40k. Some of these are raw in 2x2's. Well you guessed - I was holding one twirling under the loup and I dropped the coin. All I saw was stars as it hit the counter - even in the 2x2 I thought crap. It was a 1796 or 1797 bust half priced over 25k - I don't remember the exact price. The guy waiting on me just smiled and said don't worry about it you did not hurt it, plus we have all dropped more expensive coins at 1 time or another. I did not relax until the next day.

Also I have scratched just one coin slightly when I cracked it out of a holder. Seems like no matter how careful you are mistakes can still occur.

I screwed up when I was messing with my 7070. I was illogically trying to put an off center Lincoln cent in the Lincoln cent spot. I had a proof in the slot, so I carefully took it out and put it in a 2x2. I was mid-staple, and said to myself, "now, I just have to take caution", the coin slipped out of the nearly stapled 2x2, hit the floor, and rolled under the couch.:( As soon as that happened, I whimpered, or maybe it was squeaked, "Oh god it was a proof". I moved that sofa, and somehow, even after I had to slide it out, it had no noticeable marks. I then put it in the 2x2. When I realized I wasn't getting that off center penny in there, I put it in a new 2x2 and took out the proof to go in the album, again. All in all, it cost me 2 2x2's and I nearly killed a '66 proof Lincoln. Not a good day.

A 66 proof? As in PF66 or 1966 proof? Because if you have a 1966 proof, it is a rare coin because they are SMS coins.

Eh, I just don't care if its proof or what, it looks good in the album. I guess its a business strike, just uncirculated. :headbang: never thought of that though:headbang: Maybe I should take pictures, just to make sure I'm not insane. I am going to say that odds are it is just a business strike, but maybe its an SMS. Curses, I wish I had the type set!

Edit: I bought it at a coin shop in a 2x2, just to say where it came from

correction, I think it is an SMS. Until I am sure, even though there's nothing to really check, IGNORANCE IS BLISS.

Now I feel stupid that I didn't recognize it as SMS.

I accidentally shipped out a NGC MS-63 3-leg in place of a normal NGC MS-63 1937-D buffalo after an ebay auction. Luckily the buyer was an honest guy and returned it to me after I realized what I did. I refunded his money to him for his honesty.

SMS is kinda easy to tell from a proof, but somewhat harder to tell from an UNC coin. If you bought it from a shop, it is more likely to be an SMS. Beautiful coins though :)

Lost a $3 gold Indian Princess while evacuating my house during the 1996 (San Diego) Harmony Grove Fire. House did not burn, but I never found the coin.
