My cousin from FL. bought her BF some of those Silver Simpson coins. You have to "slum" around and look for deals...
I didn't really think about it, but, maybe this post will make me think about this a bit, and force me to give myself some structure! Hmmm, ok, I'll give it a shot! I don't think I'll have ten goals, though. Going back to the working world, I should make them SMART goals, right? Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Relevant. Time-bound. Time-bound - by December 31, 2025. Read at least five of my coin-related books. I have a bunch of coin-related books, and I never get around to reading them. Catalog my entire collection into my coin software of choice: Exact Change. (I'll readily admit that this one is NOT realistically Achievable for me, as I just have too much crap! But, I'll start with slabs, then move to my binders, then other stuff. I'll likely leave out a lot of the crap that I have no interest in, anymore, and which I'll end up either selling or giving away.) Determine what I want to collect, going forward. Put those coins in my main collection and set everything else aside to be sold and/or given away. Learn to be a proficient coin photographer and photograph at least 50 coins. Seek help from more experienced coin photographers. Finish plugging the holes in my childhood Whitman folders for US Cents, Jefferson Nickels, and Washington Quarters (I lost the folder for Roosevelt Dimes). Look up Coin Clubs in my area and attend at least one meeting. I better stop! If I put down too much more, most of it will not be Achievable!
It's strange. My Bro' in law collects coins, mostly Silver. He has given my wife coins for things like birthdays and Xmas. He never buys me coins BUT they end up in my safe as well.
I should add this to my list. Been in this town for 37 years and have yet to attend the local coin club, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2025. Just not a club kind of guy I guess.
Coin clubs? I'm not even sure that we have a good coin show in my area. Where are all the collectors congregating at?
Well, mine must be fairly active or influential, because Dan Carr is doing a medal for the anniversary. He was at their biannual coin show a couple weeks ago and the design was displayed.
I tend to avoid things that stretch the definition of what I consider "coins" lol but can't deny that sometimes my impulsive side might get tempted from time to time. I have a coin that had as its "box" a dragon egg and I just had to get it. But hey, your money, collect what you like.
In years past when I was avid in CRH, I would put the best circulation set of Jefferson nickels I could piece together. It was pretty practical to put a full set together, less the semi key specimens over the year. Folks may be surprised at how close you can get. I’d give that away to a prospective numismatist to help keep the hobby alive. It’s been a decade or so since I did that, but I may do that again. It’s an especially nice pastime during the colder months. But I’ve been thinking of upgrading my 1914 D LWC so I will track one down perhaps this year. Not a must be done task, but the hunt itself should be bring some enjoyment.
I'm still adding the odd coin to existing collections (esp Baroque papal, a few silver annuale medals of Pius VII and folles of the reform of Diocletian) so it's targets of opportunity that I run across. My primary interest however is in National Banknotes, mostly large size, of the St Louis metro area and Evansville IN. The notes I want come up rarely, so it's difficult to be specific. A few that I've been seeking for a while: all are Clayton MO smalls on charter 12333: type 1 $5 with Ruehl sig as prez and a type II $5 and $20. I know at least 2 of these exist and any condition is fine. I would also like to get a 02DB with good sigs to complement the pretty RS snagged earlier this year. Also, I hope to continue to image my NBNs as time permits.
I'm with ya! I've been here since 1985, and have never been to a coin club meeting. Haven't been to a coin show, either. Need to get out more, now that I'm retired!!!
As things stand now: I need 2 more Seated Quarters to complete my 1840's run of XF coins. I need 2 more Seated Dimes to complete my (what I call type 1) group of 1837-1840 coins. I need 2 more coins to complete my group of Fortin top 100 seated dimes featuring each type of variety. IE; DDR, DDO, Re-punched date etc. I need 6 Proof Indian Head cents to complete my 1837-1891 date set. Good luck to all in the New Year. James
What's discipline? I thought that was for the kids. I have had this on my fridge for 7 years, still can't find the time or want to go to one. PS no goals for me, Maybe find a nice Saint Gaudens, or a Gobrecht type no stars. Other than that, my goals are any coin that suits my fancy, and coins that I can get for a good price.
My goal for the year is the same as it is for every year, to get at least one coin for my early date Large Cent die variety collection. And I've already succeeded. Picked up a 1794 S-46 on Jan 2. Getting new pieces isn't easy. There are 295 Sheldon numbered varieties (including one I feel is a pattern and one that is "not a mint product". So that leaves 293 varieties and I have 270 of them. It has become so hard that I have had to start branching out into the NC varieties. When Sheldon was cataloging the die varieties, any variety that had 3 or lest specimens known in collectors hands was not included in the regular numbered run. They got their own NC numbers. NC stood for Non-Collectable. There are 60 NC varieties. When I started collecting the early dates by die variety I knew I would never be able to own an NC they were just too rare/expensive. Today I own 15 of them. I have my eye on one Sheldon numbered variety and three NC's in The Steve Ellsworth collection Heritage is selling tomorrow.
