Here's an odd consideration for someone living in California.

The state charges sales tax on coin sales (grouped on the same invoice) under $1500 but not on sales over that amount.

    :)

My goal over the next couple of years is to build out a set of 1875-CC coins, so I'd probably look for an AU half or Trade Dollar.

Since no one is lining up to give me $1400, I'm in no hurry.

That's surely a consideration during auction.

Here is a list of scarce coins that would make me happy:

These are all prices for slabbed coins.
    1914 -D Lincoln VF $350
    1872 Indian cent VF $300
    1913 -S Type 2 Buffalo Nickel F $300
1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter AU $250
    1932 -D Washington Quarter XF $200

That is approx $1400 on the nose and these would be a nice addition to my collection.

    Either a circulated Russian platinum 3 ruble (1828 - 1845) or a Japanese koban.

Something priced right. Not much chance of anything really interesting, seems all the good world coins are on such a terror the past 4 months that almost nothing is reasonably priced. Like a few others, I like the idea of Italian gold. Can get a much better doge zecchino in MS65 for $1,400. The trick is finding one that is properly graded, and not just mint state with a lousy strike.

    John Skelton Morgan man!

I am considering buying my first CC Morgan. Only question is, what year would be a good one? Actually, another question would be, which year would be the cheapest!

If you're looking to blow a $1,400 stimulus check on one, then 1885-CC in MS66-DMPL is kind of the best of all worlds. Better date with a mintage of only 228,000. Also sensational all-around great looking coin at that grade level.
