I guess because of my interest in the history period they represent my vote would go for Gettysburg and Stone Mt
All coins mentioned are really cool..thanks again to everyone who has posted here. My latest commemis a 1937 D PCGS MS 65 Texas .50..I am waiting for its delivery and will post a pic when available. Keep em coming...
Well I few weeks ago I was sending in some Struck Thru ASE to ANACS on a good deal they had going (5 coins from 1979-date for $12 each and they sent them back in 5 days...mine got back faster then 5 days) so I had 4 out of 5 and didn't have one...I don't collect many "new" coins so I sent in a good 1982 Washington Comm that I paid $5 for...it came today at PF68 HVY CAMEO!!!!!!! Speedy
Speedy... Congrats on the nice Cameo!! Way to go..if you get a chance post a pic..I really appreciate nice contrasting coins like that and have a few myself.. Keep up the search!!
Thanks...I had bought about 5 for $5 each at a fleemarket a few months ago...this one was the best by far...but I didn't think about it going this high...I'll try to post a photo! Speedy
Here is the photo...I also sent in the 2005 $5 gold piece I won from Bowers and Merena and it also came back MS68!! As you can see in these photos...you can see most of the words 3 times...mirrored!!!! Speedy
wow! thats really nice! I normally don't like proof's very much ( i like nice satiny BU coins ) but that washington of yours is a looker!
Speddy... That is a very nice looking Washington..did you have it put in a coffin? If so what grade? Nice nice coin!!
1. Bay Bridge 2. Panama Pacific, the octagonal 3. Robert F. Kennedy 4. Columbian Half (My first commemorative) 5. Booker T. Washington (Second commemorative I owned) No particular order, however I intend to buy No. 2 just as soon as I win the lottery.
Most of the modern commemoratives are affordable in high grades, but many of the older commems are not. Does it make sense to collect the older commems in VG to AU condition? I know it's important to collect what you like, but if such a collection is assembled, will someone be able to sell it someday for more than a pittance?
Cloudsweeper.. It is my personal goal to put together the highest grade that I can afford..it is a slow process but I have nothing less than a MS 64 all PCGS...I only have 1 coin slabbed that is not PCGS and itt is a NGC...I have a lot of raw material and over the years have sharpened my eye to get at least a MS 65 or better. I would guess that all of my coins are at minimum a MS 65 going all the up to MS 70- Proof 66 to Proof 70....that is my choice as for the possibility of future resale hopes. There are collectors of most every grade...I suppose it depends on your likes and your budget.. Good Hunting!!
Rickie, Thanks. I have a disadvantage that I freely admit -- I'm coming into collecting through the back door; from the investment viewpoint, not the collector's viewpoint. I bought some silver eagles, maple leafs and rounds. This made me think about the coins I collected as a kid, and I began learning all over again. Coins have a way of pulling you into the hobby like a magnet. I sort of like the gold and silver commems. The modern commems are affordable in high grades, sell reasonably close to the precious metal content, have an interesting variety, and might be more highly thought of in the future than at the present [anyway, that's my theory]. It's an interesting sideline in a complex hobby, and I need all the help I can get. If something is made of gold or silver, and is low priced due to neglect or unpopularity, I almost feel that it's my duty to rescue it and give it a good home.
Here ye here ye...my fellow collector..more like dragging you in to slap down your hard earned dollars to hold something that few will ever hold. Go for all you can and buy what looks good to you and pleases your eye. Everyone has different taste and that is what makes the world go round and round...Good luck.. I will post a oic of the newest MS 65 1937D Texas when it is delivered on Monday..until then keep an open eye and a full wallet!!
RickieB, Excellent comment. Thanks for you interest in commems. I wish I had my presentation, but it was a bunch of notes and stuff. Our club has some paranoia using a power point presentation, i.e. we are not the most computer literate club around.
Dimedude... thanks for getting back to this thread about the presentation..thats cool..no problem. I have really enjoyed reading and learning about the commems mentioned and displayed on this thread..keep em coming and thanks again.. RB
