Hey Cloudsweeper, Do not really know the upward potential of Modern Commems, however, there are some very nice ones out there. I have about 12 of the silver and only 1 of the 1/2 gold commems...perhaps someone can provide additional information on the histroy of the commem craze of the early 1900's and why they put a stop to the growing number of commems produced..I did read an article and found it interesting, but for the life of me cant find it.. By the way everyone..what a display of some very beautiful coins! There are indeed some lucky collectors out there on commems...keep em coming.
Hell yes, spider. The marine dollar will sell out! Even at 500,000. BTW $10 goes to the Marine Museum for every coin purchased! Ps...Thank You, Veteran's
RickieB: They passed a law that limits the number of commems to 2 a year. It was starting to get crazy, i think in 91 they had 4 released in the same year ( the only one i can remember off the top of my head is the USO dollar ) Still, nothing can top 1936, now that was a crazy year for commems
I have never gotten any comm from the mint but if my dealer doesn't get some Marine I will be ordering some...I think they got a good looking coin at last!!! Speedy
Hey Thanks Ranchhand..I do remember something to that effect. For those interested the Vietnam Modern Commem was the 1994W MS version 57,317 Proofs 226,262. There are 3 coins in this series the other two are the 1994W P.O.W. and the 1994W Women Veterans..cool coins and I have the entire set in MS.. no proofs yet but hope to put them together soon. Regards to all and keep the commems coming! Semper Fi to all my fellow USMC collectors..I think it will e a huge and fast sell out! Get em while you can...
Spider--if anybody knew that they wouldn't tell for a long time.... Nobody know what coin will go up and what one will come down...some may go upa nd then go down...some may go down and then go up...its just the way the market works, Speedy
Hey Spider, The USMC Commem will be the first ever of it's kind. Being a former Marine I am planning on getting several of each. It means more to me than the $$ value of the coin. The USMC is an elite rather crazy branch of the Armed Forces and I served as as 0311 (Infantry) in 1971-74. You see I am brain washed into the very fact that any image of the symbol I hold dear to my military mind and the literal hell I went through, must be a part of me forever..whew.. glad its over with the hell part ya know? The Marine Corps Emblem is a symbol of Pride, World Protection, and Fidelity to Corps and Country. Gees.. did they ever do a job on me huh???
Speedy reread post 23 and 28 i believe it is and tell me what the important word that they both have Hint- 5 letters, starts with t and ends with ink
Spider---I know you said "Think" but I also don't lie...if I'm not sure of something I try not to say it will go up or down. I could say all day that the Proofs will go up....and up and up...then you take my word as gold and go buy 10 or more...then the UNC go up and the PFF go down...I'm betting that you wouldn't be happy with me at all...that is why I (nor anyone else) can say for sure what one will go up...or even if they will go up at all...they might stay at the price the mint sells them at. Speedy
Hey Spider-Man...(hehe) could'nt help myself for that one! There are only two things in this world that anyone can tell you for sure..here they are..#1 Someday into the far far future you will meet your maker (we are all going to die). #2 Until that day comes, Uncle Sam is going to tax you on almost everything you do, and after you pass, well he is going to tax the people that get your goods, money, coins, insurance whatever...you will be taxed. #3 thru infinity No one knows for sure Live, enjoy, and do not worry about the things you can not control! RickieB
Although they are not really commemorative coins, and aren't numismatic coins, and in some circles don't even count as coins except for the shape, some of the plain old siver rounds are pretty nice. It's a major chunk of silver bullion and something different to collect if you get tired of silver eagles. I have a ten coin "bill of rights" series of silver rounds that I like a lot. It probably will never be worth more than the bullion value, but that's okay with me.
I think all he's saying Spider is that he doesn't like to give opinions on such things. Ya ever notice that I don't either
As far as modern commems go, the BU versions usually have a mintage far below the proofs, sometimes by a ratio of 5 or 6 to 1. The prices on some of these reflect this (Jackie Robinson $5, and Library of Congress $10 for example). If you want to "invest" in modern commems at issue price, the BU ones seem to be the way to go. My favorite modern commem is the $5 Constitution. Beautiful coin, although plentiful and cheap, with no upside potential over bullion prices.
I plan on purchasing a marine commem for my brother, he just got out of the marine corp and it would be a nice birthday present for him. He is not a coin collector, but still...
The Pan-Pac $50 Octagonal..............mmmmmmmmmmmm Someday....... Classic Greek (modernized) Owl Reverse.... What are those? Greek Tetradrachm? Bruce
